“I’ll be down at the bar.”

He grinned a shit eating grin. “Scared.”

“Very,” I admitted.

“You should be,” he replied.

Nope,I thought.This is not happening.

Turning, I fled from the threshold of our rooms and out my own door. I could hear Mason’s deep dark laughter following me. Briefly, I wondered who needed a drink more, me or the birthday boy.

I decided it was definitely me that was in need of alcohol first. The minute I sat down at the hotel bar, I asked for some Hennessy on ice and started texting my sister about Mason. Someone one else needed to know about this situation other than just me.

ChapterSeven

Mason

The club seemed to fit my mood, cold, dark and dungeon-like. I scrolled on my phone while Nora leaned against the bar flirting with the bartender in a way she never flirted with me. I wondered what I’d done to turn her off sometimes.

My eyes tracked her movements as she tucked hair behind her ears. The dress she’d worn with a leather jacket over it seemed to edge up over the back of her thighs threatening to show everyone what she owned.

Does she wear thongs? The dark voice was starting to stir.

Sometimes, alcohol caused it to go silent and sometimes it caused it to become even louder. The voice was always pulsating at the base of my skull, vibrating mostly alive when I was killing.

Or fucking.

Pulling the bourbon up to my lips that I’d ordered as soon as we’d gotten into The Black Room, an aptly fitting name, my eyes surveyed the room. Had Gisella ever come in here? Had she every sucked someone off in the bathroom?

Not that it mattered.

We’d been over a long ass time ago.

I’d been with plenty of women, never for more than a night. Gisella had been long my longest relationship in my now thirty-two years of life.

“Happy fucking birthday to me,” I mumbled and rolled my eyes.

My phone began to ping. It was a group chat with all four of my brothers and I cringed. I’d been off the radar for most of the month and I’d never checked back in with Mateo. My thumb slid across the screen and all of their names appeared.Mateo. Carmine. Asher. Cody.

Happy birthday, brother!

Each one had sent their own message and it almost got me to smile. Inside, I just wanted to be back in the hotel room waiting for whatever secrets the analytics might reveal on Gisella’s computer. Then maybe I could get back to…

Maybe someone would hire me out.

I need to kill someone,I thought.

Truthfully, it was one of the only times I felt better about living this life.

You never hit me back, motherfucker. Are you alive? If I don’t hear from you in the next twenty four hours, we invade Alaska.Mateo’s words made my stomach roll. They knew that Alaska was my sanctuary.

No one had ever invaded my peace.

Until, Nora.

My eyes rescanned the room, and some guy was smiling in her face now. They appeared to be leaning in way to close. I wasn’t a fan at all.

Picking up the bourbon once more, my thumb lingered as another message lit up the chat. If these mother fuckers got on a roll, it’d never stop.
