She held up her hand, the blue earrings she wore moving quickly. “I’m not about to burst onto his land. Does he know that you’re coming?”

“No.” I winced.

“Good luck,” she shrugged.

Sliding out of the red truck, I watched the innkeeper drive away. She was a blip on the horizon heading back into town when I regretted this entire damned thing. I regretted telling Sebastian DeLuca that I would deliver the message contained in the letter tucked in the back pocket of the jeans I wore.

There were no cars coming that would take me back into town and that left me with only one choice. Scale the fence and makehimtake me back into town. That was it, that was all of it.

I really didn’t have any options and the innkeeper’s warning about men in the area made a shiver run down my spine.

Turning around, my Converse crunching on the sparse gravel covering the driveway, I knew that I’d made the best decision to change shoes. Pulling out my cellphone, I saw there was one single black bar offering me service.

A deep breath and a moment later my feet had me approaching the fence. It was going to be easy enough to scale. Looking down at the padlock, I chuckled. It was on the opposite side of the fence, so he had locked himself in.

Taking a deep breath, I hoisted myself up onto the fence that wobbled under my physique. It seemed to heave and sigh under my weight causing me to roll my eyes.

Just as quickly as I mounted, I dismounted onto the other side.

That three years of gymnastics finally paid off,I thought.

Dusting my hands off, I continued up the worn overgrown path. Nearly losing my balance as I stumbled over a huge brown root, I stubbed my foot.

“This country ass town!” I hollered.

Cement.

Skyscrapers.

I missed the noise. There was noise here, but I knew that at any minute a grizzly bear could come walking by and rip me apart for dinner.Right?I’d seen a documentary a while back on them.

I gotta get back to Seattle immed…

My thoughts trailed off as I came upon a beautiful cabin. It was large and rustic looking. In the yard, there was a totem pole that seemed to be guarding the property.

I was in awe.

“Okay, this is kind of nice,” I rolled my eyes.

Getting up onto the porch, I knocked and peered into the door. Nothing seemed to stir inside but I knew he had to be here. The brand new pick-up truck was sitting in the yard behind me.

“I could always break in…and leave a note,” I tapped my lip thoughtfully.

Figuring that was a bad idea, I left the neatly stitched together porch. The sky overhead screamed that a storm might be coming. I wasn’t a weather forecaster, but something told me a storm was brewing.

Probably the crack of lighting that sparked…

I peered around the side of the house and found nothing and no one. I was in the middle of bum fuck nowhere looking for a man who definitely knew how to disappear if he wanted to.

Leave a note,I thought.

On what,I thought again.

I hadn’t brought anything to write on. Shaking my head, I found myself following a stream on the property. Wildflowers grew all along the edges of the bank creating colorful pallets, breaking apart the greenery. The stream fed into a river and I figured maybe he’d gone fishing and would be heading back soon. Walking through the undergrowth of greenery, I prayed that no bears were roaming around freely.

No one would find you…ever.

Soon the river began to drown out everything to the point that I couldn’t even hear myself think and just when I thought I couldn’t walk any further I came upon the most stunning sight I’d ever seen.
