“It’s gorgeous,” my eyes returned to marvel. “You said Raven…as in the trickster.”

She seemed surprised. “Not many people would know that?”

“I’ve heard a story or two.”

“To my people in this region of Alaska, he is not only the trickster and shapeshifter. But also a representative of adventure.” The innkeeper shrugged. “I recognize the address by the way.”

I turned my gaze back to her and frowned. “Really?”

She shrugged and hurried back over to her desk picking up my room key. “Here. Take your things to your room. I will take you to the location myself.”

“Are you sure?”

She nodded. “If the men get a whiff that there’s a single eligible female around here and you might not make it back to Seattle.”

A shiver coursed up my spine at her words. That after all was the reason I was here. A woman had gone missing…

“Thanks,” I replied heading for the steps that would take me to my room.

The key felt old and heavy in my hand. It was an old fashioned skeleton key that opened up room 129 and I stepped inside. There was a bed, a television and a bathroom off to the side. Throwing my bag onto the bed, I immediately decided to change clothes. I’d dressed more professionally out of habit. Shedding the blazer, I kept on the black tank top and jeans but removed the six inch heels.

What Sebastian DeLuca paid me, kept me in Jimmy Choos, even though I’d planned on trying to move into another division of DeLuca Technology. I had the skills and knowledge but just hadn’t had the chance to sit down and apply it.

Whipping out my personalMacbook Prowith a sparkly lime green cover, I started it up. There was a card by the nightstand with the Wi-Fi passcode. Once everything was set up, I decided to check and reply to a few emails before setting off on my mission. When everything was secure, and taken care of I emailed Mr. DeLuca his agenda for the next week. The man hardly ever slept so I knew that he was waiting, although his new fiancé seemed to have him in check lately. Brie Dutton had that man wrapped around her finger and he was utterly in love with her.

They gave me long haul romance vibes.

A small yawn escaped from my lips as I opened up my suitcase and pulled out a pair of black and whiteConverse. Giving a longing look at my Jimmy Choos, I put them on. They would make for moving around easier on the terrain here.

Twisting the key, I locked up my room and headed back to the front desk. The innkeeper was already waiting by the door, sunlight falling across her. She turned and her eyes almost appeared to flicker from black to brown again.

Startled, I rubbed my eyes.

“Are you okay?” A concerned frown had placed itself on her face.

I nodded. “Yes.”

“Alright, let’s get you on your way.”

Following her out, I took in my surroundings. The small town of Virgin Creek seemed to thrum with life. Across from the inn, there was a book shop, a coffee shop and some sort of fishing shop with a white sign in the window advertising for help.

The innkeeper had a beat up old pickup truck whose red paint was peeling and hard. I took it in and she paused.

“City girl like you, must be used to limousines,” she remarked.

“Not at all,” I shrugged.

The engine roared to life sounding powerful and hungry. We pulled away from the little hotel. Country music eased its way through the speakers and I found myself enjoying the song being able to picture everything happening within the song. The truck took us along bends and curves until I was lost in the scenery of Alaska.

If you were to get lost up here, you’d never find your way out.

The thought toppled through my head as we went around a steep curve and my body lurched from side to side. Fighting car sickness back, I glanced over at the woman driving. Her strong proud features present. My grandmother had been native, but she’d died years ago, and had barely passed down any of her knowledge. We could have been related for all I knew.

“We’re here,” she spoke, just as the car tumbled to a stop.

There was a gate at the end of the road that had a fence with a padlock on it. Was it to keep people out or to keep someone in?

“Mmm…”
