ChapterTwo

Nora

It was summer in Alaska but it seemed to turn to winter with how cold the air suddenly felt surrounding my body. The temperature had dropped tremendously in just moments. The rain from the storm was beating down as though God himself were throwing the rain drops. The rain seemed to freeze on my skin the moment it hit, soaking me to the bone. My clothes felt heavy as I chased behind Mason nearly losing my footing.

Lightening rocked across the sky and I wasn’t so sure I was going to survive. Mason was a blurry black shadow that seemed to be getting further and further ahead of me. My lungs screamed; they were on fire from trying to pull air into them and keep pace with him.

I wanted to give up, though I didn’t. I pushed on, my feet hitting puddle after puddle.

Damn, did I really walk this far? I thought of my earlier trek and naturally, thoughts turned to the mysterious man that worked for Mr. DeLuca.

Except for some months in the summer, and sporadically through the year, Mason was Sebastian DeLuca’s shadow. There was a familiarity there, and it wasn’t just one of a boss and employee nature. They were symbiotic in nature, yin and yang. Where ever Sebastian roamed, Mason was mere inches from him.

I stopped running, about ready to give up. Taking a moment, I started to pull in the cool air letting the rain beat against my back.

Just lay down and die, I thought finding it kind of humorous.

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” Mason splashed back into view, his voice cutting above the roar of the rain.

It was then I noticed that the gentle creek I’d ran by earlier had started to swell. It was becoming a mini raging river , feeding into an even larger river and I was in danger. My eyes went back to him, he was soaked as well. The tresses on his head had never dried from his dip in the water I’d found him in. Now it was plastered down over his face. Mason’s face was so attractive and I noticed there was a spot of hair missing from his eye brow giving him the appearance resembling that of Scar from the Lion King.

The dark prince, my senses seemed to tingle.

Before I could think, Mason was tossing me over his shoulder. “PUT ME DOWN!”

My demanding words fell on deaf ears as I bounced around like a sack of potatoes on this man’s shoulders. I thumped at his back a few times hoping he’d get the hint. Instantly, I regretted my actions as one of his hands came up and slapped against my ass. I stilled at his actions and heat colored my face but secretly, I was relieved not to be running anymore and soon found that Mason had slowed down.

Finally he placed me on my feet and my eyes took in that we were on his covered porch. My left ass cheek was smarting from where he’d smacked it moments earlier while my right felt secure where my cellphone was. My hand wanted to go back there and soothe it but I didn’t dare.

Mason was looming over me too, looking down at me, heat rolling off his body. He was way to close and flashes of silver darted through my mind’s eye.

Stepping away, allowing air to wash over my body. “Give a girl some warning next time?”

Getting my bearings about myself, I took in the yard that seemed to be flooding. The totem pole that was out in the yard was a big angry blur that seemed to loom like a shadow, much like its owner. There was a huge stack of firewood behind me that I was already imagining being thrown into a hot fire as the wood crackled and popped pushing out heat.

He raised an eyebrow and moved towards his front door. “You could have just left the letter…and then left completely.”

Parting my lips, I wanted to say something rude but remembered myself. Pulling myself up to my full height which didn’t amount to much, I missed my high heels something terrible.

“I wouldn’t have had a ride back to town…”

Mason’s back to was completely bare to me and I knew he must not have seen me as a threat because he was the type to never have his back to anyone. I stared at it, watching it ripple under his wet black tee-shirt that was coated to his body. The jingle of keys hit my ears and the door to his cabin opened and he stepped inside leaving me where I was. Part of me wanted to scream because I’d already invaded his space once. Shivers were beginning to rack my body and the cold was starting to set in.

God, I hate Alaska,I thought thinking of my warm little condo.

However, I remained where I was and finally he poked his head back around. “Are you coming in?”

“I was waiting on an invite, don’t wanna get shot,” I quipped referencing earlier how he’d came out of a water fall packing more than just his appendage.

As if reading my mind, a smirk appeared. “Come in, Nora or I’ll let the wolves get you.”

Fuck,I thought and hurried inside.

“Not funny,” I told him as I passed by him and into the house.

“Stand right there…I’ll get you a towel to dry off.”

He was gone in a flash and I stood there dripping water all over the house. My teeth began to chatter and slowly, my hands dragged over my arms wishing for warmth. The low light in the house from the outside had me straining my eyes.
