He had died.

Tobias should have been dead.

A shudder ran down my spine.

He had my woman.

He had Nora…

Opening the velvet box, as the town car carrying Gisella departed I found a thin black card, with silver writing. The word‘midnight’appeared to flicker from the door light. Casually tucked into the box, a fire opal pin shaped like a flame set shimmering.

“What is that?” Matteo asked leaning close to the pin and inspecting it. I handed it over to him so that he could get his eyeful.

I swallowed, soberness returning to my body.

“My key to hell,” I answered.

Tobias was going to die tonight, and so was my fucking father.

I had been a long time coming, but that sorry piece of shit sperm donor was going to die by my hands.

I swore it on Nora’s life.

ChapterTwenty-Three

Nora

Darkness surrounded me. I was bathing in it, and every once in a while, an eerie glow from the taillight would let me know that I was alive. That I was still stuffed inside of a trunk.

My face hurt too, from where Tobias had struck me earlier. The car seemed to come to a stop, the red lights flashed, alerting me that the breaks had been hit. From beneath me, I felt the car idle for a moment and then slowly I felt the engine die beneath my back.

I was scared shitless. The Catwoman costume made me feel even more constricted than I was. Tobias opened the trunk and stared down at me. He had crazy eyes and I wasn’t sure how I’d missed that. There was no way in hell I would give him the satisfaction of fear. Of letting him know that he was slowly building a condo in my head, that if I survived, his face would be there, haunting my every nightmare.

He hustled me out of the trunk and the parking lot lights from wherever we were, shined down on us causing me to squint. Pain filled my eye sockets and I felt disoriented unable to take in my surroundings the way I wanted to.

“I’ll scream!” I hissed at him.

He leaned in closely, that dark miasma from earlier surrounding us both. I wanted to choke because it was so thick. “In the end, Darlin, they always do.”

I spat at him, and he slapped me again. Stinging white hot pain returned and then he pushed a hood over my head, and I returned to the darkness once again.

The only reason I knew we were inside of a building was that the echo of my footstep changed. A dinging sound told me that we’d entered an elevator and then exited.

My body went sliding into a corner and I barely had time to brace myself for the fall that came my way. With my shoulder taking the brunt of my tumble, I tried to steady myself but dared not take off the hood.

Give him no reaction,I thought.

If I die…I won’t give him any satisfaction.

“This was not part of the plan,” my ears perked up and an unfamiliar voice hit my ears.

“Yeah, well your plan was taking too fucking long!” Tobias screamed.

“Don’t raise your voice to me Tobias,” the other man’s voice dripped power and authority.

My ears were straining so much I forgot to be nervous. The only thing I could do was whimper when I felt some one lift me. I knew it wasn’t Tobias but it just didn’t feel right. They pushed me into a chair and soon ropes were wrapped around my hands and feet binding me to the chair.

A door in the room opened and I heard a womanly sigh hit my ears. “You’ve gone and gotten him good and pissed.”
