As soon as the last word leaves his mouth, he hangs up. Fucking wanker. He knew I was going to tell him to shove his idea straight up his arse.

I toss the phone behind me and run my hands down my face. This is a disaster.

And of course, I have to get ready for hockey practice where Rhett Remington will have something to say to me about last night. I just hope he uses his mouth instead of his fists. I don’t feel like getting my arse kicked today.

Lucas is off his rocker if he thinks I’m going to ask Avery to be in a fake relationship with me.

Especially one named Cramington.

Am I supposed to buy her flowers and ask her on a date, and when she looks at me like I lost it, tell her not to worry cause it won’t be real? I don’t blame Rhett if he kicks my arse. Fuck. If I could, I’d do it myself.

Although in all honesty, if this plan didn’t involve his sister, he might have some good advice.

Obviously not doing what he and Lucy did, because there’s no way I’m getting into a real relationship.

Or falling in love.

Or getting married.

Or any of that other feel good bullshit.

I don’t want or need any of that.

But I’m not going to lie, it would be nice to get my new contract with the Devils and secure more sponsors. I can stay with the team I’ve grown to love, squirrel the extra money away for my inevitable life without hockey.

Bollocks.

Can I really ask Avery to fake date me?

* * *

“Oh, look who decided to show up for practice,” Rhett bites out as he hops up from the bench and hulks toward me in full gear. I’m tall, but he’s got me by an inch, and with his skates on, there’s an even bigger difference. “I thought I made it crystal clear that my sister is off limits. If you weren’t my friend, you’d be on your ass right now.”

I glance around the locker room, and no one is even brave enough to look my way.

Not even Linc, the team captain.

Rude.

I guess none of them will be jumping up to help me if he does decide to punch me in the face anyway.

I hold up my hands, and approach him slowly, much like I would a wild animal. Or I guess any animal that wasn’t a cat or a dog. “I didn’t mean for it to happen. It was a mistake.”

He cocks his head to the side and his lip curls up in a sneer. The noise he lets out is something between a growl and a grunt. “You’re saying my sister is a mistake? You think you’re too good for her, Craig?”

“No. No. That’s not what I’m saying at all.”

Shit.

I was right.

This is a disaster.

He leans down, stopping an inch from my face, his gaze never leaving mine. “Then what are you saying? Talk slow.”

I take a deep breath, blow it out gradually, and step back. “It’s not what you think. There’s this girl who’s been following me around.” His eyes darken and narrow on me. “That’s not what you’re thinking either. I didn’t shag her, I shagged her sister.” This time he full on growls and takes another small step toward me. I put my hands back up and start talking faster. “It was months ago, over the summer. It meant nothing. This chick has been showing up after games and at parties. I wanted to get rid of her and I obviously didn’t think things through, so I told her Avery was my girlfriend, and then the kiss just sort of happened.”

“So you used my sister? Is that what you’re saying?”
