“And whose type is she?” Every asks.

Damn. Having a sister who’s so smart and devious can be fun. We had a lot of fun when we were younger, and we definitely gave Wyatt hell. But ever since she fell for Quinn and had Esme, she’s gotten pushy about my love life. She bitched the whole time she was pregnant that I couldn’t keep it in my pants. Now, she’s gone in the opposite direction.

“I don’t know. I have work to do,” I say, putting Esme into the high chair. I kiss her head and get the hell out of there. With the lunch rush over, I step outside for a break. My mind is still trying to figure out what the hell is going on, when the door opens and Wyatt steps out. Fuck.

“You know, you should do a better job to hide your feelings.”

Just like yesterday, I lean against the building. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

He chuckles. “Listen, I get that maybe you don’t want to talk to Everly about it.”

“Like that’s gonna matter.”

“True.” I feel his study so I look over at him. He’s looking at me like he did those times he was really worried about me. “What?”

“Just be careful.”

“What does that mean?”

“She’s a single mom from what I read on the JSE yesterday.”

Yeah, Wyatt is on the JSE, although he never posts. He says it’s to keep up with what’s going on in town because he’s a businessman. I think he uses it to keep an eye on Becca, to make sure she’s safe.

“You think I would mess around with a single mom and my next-door neighbor?”

“I could see you falling for someone like that.”

I blink. “Why on Earth would you say that?”

He offers me a sad smile. “Even though Everly’s a mama now, we both know she had her doubts, and I’ve said I don’t want kids.”

Of course he doesn’t. He had to raise us before he was old enough to deal with it.

“But you’ve always loved kids. I know you would have loved to have a few more brothers and sisters. You talked about it all the time.”

“I did?”

He smiles. “You did. I see the way the kids gravitate to you, so I always assumed you would have children. You never said you didn’t want to get married and have them. Just be careful.”

“I’d never hurt them.”

He offers me another sad smile. “Dude, I’m worried you’ll get attached to the kids and the mother.”

“Are you telling me not to get involved?”

“I know better than that. If I told you not to do something, you would do the exact opposite. All I am saying is to be careful. She’s got kids and if she’s a good mother—and Nancy claims she is—she’ll put them first always. It’s a different dynamic than you’re used to.”

I nod. “What you’re telling me is that you care and you want to give me a hug.”

“Fuck off,” he says, as he turns to go back in.

I rush him and wrap my arms around Wyatt. “You care about me.”

“Fuck off,” he repeats, but I hear the laughter just below the curse. We might have been dysfunctional as hell, but we always had each other. “Let me go before I kick your ass.”

I laugh and let him go. “Thanks, Wyatt.”

He nods, and turns to leave once again, but I stop him. “You know you deserve to be happy too, right?”
