Nancy smiles and nods. “We wanted to take you out to celebrate.”

And this is why I jumped at this job. I loved my last job, but Mr. Fogel was retiring and shutting down the business. His son would take over some aspects of it, but I had never liked him. When this position came up, I knew it would be perfect.

I open my mouth to respond when the front door opens, and a young woman who looks vaguely familiar walks in. She’s wearing a shirt that says,‘The Mason Jar, and she’s holding a plastic bag.

“Hey, Nancy. Travis.” She looks at me. “You must be Liv, right? Mason sent this.”

“Oh…I didn’t order anything.”

The smile she gives me makes me think I’m missing the point of a joke.

“Courtesy of Mason. He said he wanted to send you something on your first day at your new job.”

She sets the container down on my desk, and I fumble to grab my wallet so I can give her a tip.

“Nope. Mason said you would try to tip me and that I should refuse.”

“Oh, I can’t let you go without giving you a tip.”

“Don’t worry. Bossman gave me a nice twenty-percent tip.”

After a wave, she leaves me with two very interested bosses in the office.

“I had no idea you knew Mason,” Nancy says, smacking away Travis’ hand when he reaches out to the bag. “Hands off.”

“I was just going to look to see what he sent.”

Nancy doesn’t take her gaze from mine. “Travis, why don’t you go pick us up something to eat?”

“Yes. That sounds good, and I’ll mention to Mason what a dick he was for not sending enough for us.”

“I can share.”

Travis is almost to the door when I say that. He turns and looks at Nancy with a hopeful expression. She shakes her head.

“No. He will eat it all and not leave you anything. You’ve been here for hours and need to eat. I want that spicy chicken Caesar salad, babe.”

“I know,” he says, stepping back to give her a kiss before heading out for their lunch.

“Finally. Come on, let’s go to the kitchen so you can get away from the desk. And don’t worry about answering any calls unless it’s personal.”

I smile and follow her into the kitchen. I could have argued, but I would have lost. That is one thing I have learned with Nancy. It’s probably why she’s successful in a business with more men than women.

Once we get settled, I open the container, feeling weird that I’m eating in front of her. “Want a fry?”

She nods. “I never turn down a fry.”

She takes one as I unwrap the brisket sandwich. And yes, he picked my favorite kind of barbecue. It’s then that I see a note that he put beneath my sandwich.

Good luck on your first day. Thinking of you today.

It makes me smile, and I guess it should freak me out. He paid attention to what I liked in his restaurant,. I can’t fight the curve of my lips as I think about him thinking about me.

“So, you know Mason.”

I hum after taking a bite and wait to answer until after I swallow it. “Yeah. He’s my next-door neighbor.”
