“And?”

“My kids might have barged into his house looking for Houdini, and he fed us all breakfast. Avery’s still mad she missed the food.”

“And?”

I thought back to Sammy bothering him yesterday. “Sammy might have helped him in the yard yesterday.”

“Aw. He misses his grandpas.”

I nod. Sammy was born after Sam died, but my father and Sam’s spent lots of time with him, with both my kids, really.

“But Mason didn’t have a problem with him. In fact, he seemed to be tickled with the attention.”

“Oh, yeah, Mason is a good guy, but he likes an audience.”

The memory of the two of them down on the ground digging holes for new tomato plants hits me. Just like when it happened, my heart gets squishy.

“Aww, look at you, falling in love.”

I blink and refocus on Nancy, who is grinning at me.

“No. I barely know him. He was just nice to Sammy.”

My face is so hot, I’m amazed I don’t set off the fire alarm from the heat.

She cocks her head to the side, her knowing gaze studying me. Then she straightens up. “You definitely have a crush, and while I normally just let things go, I want to know, so I will twist your arm. You didn’t just meet him.”

“And why do you say that?”

Oh, God, I just used the prissy tone. Avery says it’s one of my biggest tells.

“You’re blushing, and there’s a certain way you say his name.”

I roll my eyes and pick up a fry to nibble on. She says nothing. Instead, she simply stares at me. It takes me more than a few seconds, but I break.

“You can’t tell anyone.”

“Other than Syd.”

“Wait, what?”

“She’s my bestie, but she’s like one of my sisters. I mean, sheismy sister-in-law to be.”

“Fine, but swear her to silence.”

“Of course,” she says, holding up one hand and putting the other over her heart.

“Remember I told you that my sisters and I went to Vegas after accepting this job?”

“Yes, I was so jealous.”

“Anyway, the last night, I was on my way to my room when I ran into this beautiful, charming younger man.”

There is a beat of silence before Nancy explodes. “Oh. My. God.”

“Yeah, it was amazing, but I never thought I would see him again.”

“You didn’t know he was from Juniper.”
