She leaned forward. “Tell me about your parents.”

“My parents.Well, my mum will be thrilled I’m coming for a visit, particularly since I’m bringing guests. They’ll be equally excited to finally meet you.”

“Oh. Um, what do they know? I mean, have you spoken to them about…you know?”

“If you mean about your ordeal, I have not. However, they are aware of Ridge and Seraphina’s wedding and that the bride has a delightful sister who I, um, and Beau, consider a friend.”

Luisa’s eyes scrunched. Had she also winced? God, I hated how often I felt I had to measure my words when I spoke with her. Did saying Beau regarded her as a friend offend her? Disappoint her?

Based on her expression, something was clearly amiss. I was about to ask what when she got up and sat in the seat beside me.

“You’re probably wondering why I’m not asking about the threat against me,” I said, feeling as though I needed to be close to Press in order to discuss it at all.

“I’m not,” he responded.

I studied him. “Why aren’t you?”

Like he often did, Press took my hand in the same way I imagined my father would if he were still alive. Actually, maybe notmyfather, but one who was close to his children.

“We don’t have to talk about it until you’re ready.”

I rested my head on his shoulder like I had in the sunroom in Tryst’s house. “You’re always so patient with me.”

“I cannot imagine a reason I wouldn’t be.”

I raised my head. “You weren’t earlier.”

He sighed and closed his eyes. “My apologies,” he said when he reopened them.

“I’ll accept them if you tell me why you were acting the way you were.”

Press gave me a sidelong glance. “I believe I already have done.”

“Look me in the eye and tell me theexcuseyou gave me was the real reason behind your behavior.”

“Have you and Seraphina always gotten along?”

I laughed. “I’m not sure what that has to do with it, but definitely not.”

“My irritation was far more with my brother than you. Again, I apologize for making you think otherwise.”

“What was he doing to irritate you?”

“Breathing,” he muttered.

I laughed a second time. “I’m familiar with the feeling.”

He raised a brow.

“I mean with Seraphina. I think she felt that way with me more than I did with her.”

“Luisa…”

“The threat.” I hadn’t allowed my mind to wander with what it might be, and as much as I’d rather not know, I had to.
