Ridge looked from me to my sister.

“What?” I asked.

“He’s staying in Napa indefinitely,” he responded.

“What about Seahorse?”

When Ridge studied me, I wondered if the panic I felt was evident in the tone of my voice.

“He’s left it for extended periods of time in the past,” he said.

“What’s wrong, Luisa?” my sister asked.

“Nothing.” I went upstairs, into the bedroom, and closed the door behind me before my first tear fell. Press was staying in Napa indefinitely and hadn’t even called or texted to tell me? Maybe he didn’t think it was any of my business. But we usually talked every day. At least once. In fact, this was the longest we’d gone without seeing each other since I’d been rescued from the shipping container.

The door opened, and Jada came in. “You should call him.”

“Who? Beau or Press?”

“Press.”

“If he wants to talk to me, he knows the number.”

Jada shook her head. “Instead of just picking up the phone yourself, you’ll hide out in the bedroom and cry. You’re so stubborn.”

“He obviously has more important things to take care of.” More important than taking care of me, I thought but didn’t say. He’d spent the last two months worrying about me and only me. It was time to let him off the hook and manage on my own.

“Luisa, Press cares about you. Everyone knows it.”

I lay on the bed and looked up at the ceiling the same way I had the last time Jada and I talked about Press. “Maybe he thinks it’s time I learned to take care of myself. I don’t disagree.”

“Maybe he isn’t calling you because you’re not calling him.”

“I doubt it.”

“Argh,” I heard her growl before she left the room.

I pulled out my phone and, before I could talk myself out of it, sent him a text.I’m thinking about you. Hope you’re doing okay.

I waited, but there was no sign he was responding. When an hour passed and he still hadn’t, I put my head in the pillow and cried harder.

“What?” I barked when there was a knock at the door.

“Hey,” said Seraphina, coming over to sit beside me on the bed.

“I’m fine. Okay?”

“I can tell.”

I looked over my shoulder at her, and she smiled.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“Was Brix able to talk to you about the two profilers investigating your case wanting to interview you?”

I felt my body stiffen and rolled my shoulders. “No.”

“Would you be willing to?”
