“I’m glad.”

“Okay, well, um…”

“Tell me what’s on your mind, pet.” I cringed. She hated when I used what I considered a term of endearment. “Sorry.Luisa,” I emphasized her name.

“It’s okay. It doesn’t bother me when you call me that.”

“Since when? I distinctly remember your scowl and reprimand when I did it at the wedding. That wasn’t so long ago.”

“It feels like forever.”

It did to me as well. Every minute away from her felt like a lifetime. Best to rip the bandage off now, though. At least I’d be preoccupied with the work to be done here.Ha!Who was I kidding? Nothing would stop me from thinking about her.

“Is that funny?”

Good God, had I laughed out loud? “No, no, of course not.”

“Why did you chuckle?”

“It had nothing to do with you saying the wedding feels like forever ago.”

I heard her sigh.

“Luisa…”

“Yes?”

I’d probably regret my words, but I had to say them. “I miss you.”

“Oh, thank God,” she said, audibly letting out the breath she’d been holding. “I miss you too.”

“I’ve wanted to call.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Why hadn’t I? What misguided advice had I been giving myself? Ah, I remembered. “I thought it best to give you space.”

“I told you at the wedding that if I wanted space, I’d say so.”

“You didn’t contact me either, pet.”

“I was giving you space.”

I laughed. “Touché.”

“There’s something we need to talk about,” she began.

“I’m listening.”

“The kiss.”

The two words were akin to her stabbing me in the heart. “Yes, the kiss.”

“I didn’t expect Beau to do that.”

“And yet he did.”

“I know you won’t believe me, but I didn’t want him to.”
