She was right. I found it hard to believe. “What makes you say so?” I asked anyway.

“I know it seemed like I had a crush on him.”

I murmured my agreement.

“I’m over it.”

“So easily? Does it have anything to do with the possibility he’s in Australia?”

“Press.”

“Luisa.”

“I’m not interested in Beau, okay? I mean, I’m not interested in anyone. How could I be? There’s some lunatic out there who wants tobuyme, for God’s sake.”

Not…interested…in…anyone. Those words hurt just as much as the reminder of the kiss. And she was right. How could she be? “I hate to cut this short, but I’ve a meeting starting in a few minutes I’m not entirely prepared for. Perhaps we can talk again later?”

“Of course. Right. My apologies.” The last bit was said mimicking the words I said so often. “Bye, Press.”

She ended the call without my having the chance to say anything else. It was probably for the best, given I doubted I could mask the disappointment I felt.Unjustlyfelt. Luisa had never hidden the fact that I wasn’t someone she was interested in. While the confirmation didn’t come as a surprise, it didn’t stop it from hurting.

The minute I set my mobile down, I regretted lying and saying I had a meeting. Besides the conversations between my father and me, I had no plans to speak with anyone in the near future. If I hadn’t reacted so hastily, I would still be enjoying the pleasure of her voice, her wit, her everything.

My mobile rang again, and since I knew it wouldn’t be Luisa, I thought about not even picking it up. However, if it was Beau calling, I’d hate to miss the opportunity to give him a piece of my mind. Instead, I saw it was Zin.

“Hello, counselor.”

“How goes it?” he asked.

“Not a lot differently than before you departed earlier. My father is encouraging me to abandon him like my brother has, which I refuse to do.”

“Seraphina is worried about her sister.”

“We all are, and frankly, I’m surprised this news is coming through you.”

“She thought you’d listen to me.”

“How misguided of her.”

Zin laughed. “That’s what I said.”

“You took it upon yourself to call anyway.”

“I know I’ve been an asshole about it, but the two of you look equally miserable. Before you say it, I am aware your mother died, Press. Still, your entire demeanor changed once the SUV transporting Luisa to Butler Ranch pulled away.”

There was nothing for me to dispute. He was right. I felt like a part of me left with her. And perhaps it had.

“I spoke with her a few minutes ago.”

“I’m aware,” he said.

“How?”

“She came downstairs after your call ended.”

“And?”

“It was evident she’d been crying.”
