“Both are mum on the subject.”

The door opened, and Beau joined us. “Can I get you, ladies, anything?”

“Nothing for me, thanks,” said Seraphina.

I disagreed. “Actually, there is something she needs. Can you please arrange to have Noah Ridge delivered?”

“We’re fresh out of Noahs, but how about some pizza?” said Beau, laughing. I chuckled too until I saw the look on my sister’s face.

She and Beau went inside at the same time Press came out.

“You’re probably tired of everyone asking how you are,” he said, sitting on the chaise Seraphina had vacated.

“Honestly, I feel numb. I don’t know what I think about anything.”

“You’re still in shock. It’s to be expected.”

“Is it?” I asked.

Press nodded. “When you feel ready, I can make arrangements for a therapist to come to Seahorse.”

“What made you choose that name? Or was it already called that when you bought it?”

He smiled and looked out at the water. “It’s one of the few places where it’s still possible to ride horses on the beach. Sounds a bit trite when I explain it that way.”

“Do you have horses?” I asked.

“I do.” He pointed north. “There’s a stable as well as a barn on the property.”

“What’s the difference?”

“A stable houses horses, whereas a barn will often be used for other livestock or to store machinery.”

“You’re that guy, aren’t you?”

He smiled. “Which guy is that?”

“The one everyone goes to for answers.”

He laughed. “I suppose I am a bit of a know-it-all.”

We were quiet for a couple of minutes while I thought about his response. “I want you to know I didn’t mean anything bad by what I said. I actually find it reassuring.”

“That’s kind of you to say.”

“You don’t believe me.”

Press turned his head and looked into my eyes.

“Like that,” I said before he had a chance to speak.

“What do you mean?”

“When you look at me like that…I’m not sure how to explain it other than to say it makes me feel like I’m going to be okay.”

His eyes bored into mine. “I will do everything within my power to make sure you are, Luisa. I promise.”

I’d never once believed it when Jorge promised anything, but with Press, I did. I shuddered.
