“There’s something we should take care of. Probably should have by now and I want you to know that I’m not bringing it up because I don’t believe you or anything like that… but I think we should get a DNA test done.”

Hurt flashes in her eyes, but she schools her expression quickly.

“Lilah, please don’t take this the wrong way—”

“No, I get it. It’s fine. You have to cover your bases. Adelaide said as much.”

“Adelaide? What di—”

We’re interrupted by Monica yelling for her mom.

“Listen, you just let me know what you need me to do and I’ll take care of it on my end. No worries. I have to go see what’s up with Monica. See you in a few days.”

“Yeah, okay.”

The screen goes black before the words are barely out of my mouth.

Why do I feel so guilty for asking for the test?

I set my phone on the table as Tripp sets another beer in front of me.

“Everything all right?” He sits down across from me with a raised brow.

“Yeah. I just feel like a bastard asking her for a DNA test.”

“Pfft. Don’t. Anyone else? It would’ve been the first thing they asked for.” He tips back his beer.

I pull up a picture of Monica and slide the phone across the table. “Have a look for yourself.”

He studies it for a second. “She’s beautiful, man. And yeah, no doubt she’s yours with those eyes.”

“See?” I say, taking back my phone and looking at her picture again. “I don’t doubt it. I just want my ass covered.”

“You’re really enjoying this new daddy role.” Amusement coats his tone.

“Honestly, it feels like nothing in my life meant anything before her. Doing right by her is the only thing that matters.”

He raises a brow. “How’s Adelaide feel about that?”

I take a pull from my beer. “She’s struggling to adjust, but she’s coming around. She met Monica for the first-time last weekend. It went as well as can be expected.”

“I’m sure she’ll come around.”

“Yeah, me too. She has a lot on her plate. Pretty stressed out with the wedding. It’s been a lot for her.” Saying the words makes me realize that I need to make more of an effort to show her she’s still a priority in my life. We need a romantic night together. “Anyway, any idea where I can get a DNA test done on the down low?”

He smirks. “Of course I do. You know how many women come out of the woodwork every year claiming I’m their baby daddy? My team has that shit on speed dial.”

“Great, send it my way.” I take another pull off my beer.

“Will do. But first, let's figure out what we’re going to do for your bachelor party.” He rubs his hands in front of himself like an evil genius, and I roll my eyes.

I have more important things to worry about than a bachelor party. We’re going to be releasing a statement to the press in a few weeks, and I need to get things in place and have a conversation with Lilah about what that means for her and Monica.

Chapter Sixty-four

LILAH

Iwasn’t shocked when Jimmy brought up the DNA test, but it hurt. He stood in my kitchen, telling me we had to trust one another. But I have no way to take him wanting one other than a sign that he doesn’t fully trust me. I get that it takes a second to break trust and a lifetime to rebuild it, but we’ve been on our way. At least I thought so, but maybe I was alone in that thinking.
