She shakes her head into my chest.

“Think you can get back to sleep?” I pull away and look down at her.

She yawns, already halfway to sleepland again. Gently, I lay her back and pull the covers up to her shoulders. She snuggles into the pillow, and in under ten seconds, her breathing is deep and even.

I stand from the bed, careful not to disturb her, and tiptoe out of the room. Turning around, I admire her one more time before I close the door, backstepping into a rock-hard body.

Jimmy grips my upper arms. “It’s just me,” he whispers in a gravelly voice.

I whirl around, but the minute his scent hits, my nostrils I relax. The little light coming in from the window at the end of the hall reflects off his eyes. He’s staring at me, and his hands have yet to leave my body. Heat from his fingertips trails a path directly to between my thighs.

I hold his gaze, my chest heaving as I suck in a breath from being in such close proximity to him.

The air between us charges, and the smallest move from either of us could ignite a flame.

Slowly his head bends down, our eyes locked, and I can’t help the way my chin tips up. My chest is drawn to his, and his breathing is heavily audible in the quiet of the hallway. Our lips are inches apart, and my mouth salivates at the thought of tasting him again. Jimmy sucks in a breath as my teeth press down on my bottom lip in an attempt to keep my desire at bay.

His eyes slowly close as he inhales deeply and lets me go. I want to weep at the loss, but instead I slide down the wall a couple of feet and scoot past him into my room. I shut the door and lean back against it, trying to gather myself.

What the hell was that?

Chapter Seventy

JIMMY

Days turn into weeks, and soon my loss of Adelaide doesn’t hurt. She called me a handful of times, but I think by the time it ended, we both knew there was no coming back from what she did. I realize that the truth is I only lost what I thought I had with Adelaide. The fact that she was willing to sell me out means she isn’t worth my continued emotional turmoil.

A joint statement released last week declared the mutual end of our relationship and proclaimed our continued love and respect for one another. I have no respect nor love for Adelaide anymore. And I’m sick of moping around with this weight on my shoulders. So I promise myself that I’m no longer looking back, only forward.

This time with Monica has been a blessing, but it’s bound to come to an end sooner or later.

“You two ready for the show?” Lilah asks as she steps onto the covered porch. She passes Monica and me our own bowls of popcorn and positions Monica between us.

According to the weather report, a storm is coming, a big one, and we’ll be able to see it roll in over Lake Washington. We’ve parked ourselves out here, hoping for a light show. It’s twilight, but dark clouds are rolling in west of us.

Monica tries to stump me with riddles while we wait, with the aid of Lilah and her cell phone.

“Wow!” Monica says in an awed whisper at the first flash of lightning in the distance.

The deep roll of thunder sounds soon after.

“Pretty cool, right?” I say to her.

“Will it do it again?” she asks, eyes wide with excitement.

“Yep. Wanna know a trick?”

She nods enthusiastically.

“If you count the seconds between the lightning strike and when you hear the thunder, that tells you how many miles away the lightning is,” I say.

“Really?”

“Yep. Wanna try it on the next one?”

She smiles and nods.

Soon after, another bolt of lightning forks toward the ground.
