She half smiled and released her fingers from his in submission while he kept her pinned against the wall.
“Fine, Ben,” she said calmly.
He released her hands and backed away from her. As he pulled back, he caught the scent of the coconut shampoo in her hair. He closed his eyes and turned around.
“The family makes no allowances. You’re lucky that I do.”
“Should I be thanking you, then?” she asked with a scoff.
“You should be concerned,” he said, spinning around with a glare.
She walked to the couch. He admired her ass shaking as she walked. She sat and crossed her legs, folding her arms over her breasts.
He looked down at the photo of Liz and her dad at the zoo. “You should think of your family,” he said, tracing the frame with his fingers.
“You wouldn’t dare,” she warned, leaning forward.
“I would,” he shot back, facing her.
He determined she was not as easy to crack as he thought. She wouldn’t back down unless something or someone she loved was truly in danger.
“My brothers would agree.” He glared at her. “No one is safe when they are in debt to the family.” He walked toward her. “Do we have an understanding?”
She leaned up and faced him, their noses almost touching. “Cortana!” she yelled suddenly. “Techno-punk music, volume ten!”
He reached down quickly to cover her mouth, but she dodged out of his way. The music blared through the apartment, sending a ringing through his eardrums. He screamed in agony and dropped to his knees, covering his ears.
He opened his eyes slightly to catch a glimpse of Liz grabbing clothes and shuffling them on quickly before grabbing her keys and heading toward the door.
“Elizabeth!” he bellowed fiercely, desperately fighting the torturous music. She turned to face him and cocked a half smile once more before leaving the apartment and slamming the door.
He tried to block out the music by remembering the anger that surged through him when he found out she had tried to blackmail the family. He crawled slowly, each inch agonizing and tormenting. He reached the kitchen counter where the device sat. He reached up, straining every muscle in his body, and ripped the wire out of the socket.
He collapsed to the floor, breathing heavily, and waited for the ringing in his ears to subside. His head pounded intensely as he thought of her stare before she called for the music. She wasn’t innocent, easily manipulated, or soft. She was devious, cunning, and spiteful.
She was more like him than he thought. She could actually be of use in his plans if he could find her. He used the counter to stand and looked over at the crack in the blinds. He had to have her. Now.
Chapter6
Liz
Frantically throwing on her shirt and skirt, Liz ran out of the apartment and down the fire escape, hearing the blaring music behind her. She swung open the door to the fire escape.
Her shoes clunked down the metal steps as she felt the cold breeze hit her face. Instincts took over, and she only had one thought on her mind ... run.
Her chest burned as her breathing became heavier. Footsteps followed her. She ducked into a corner of the fire escape, holding her breath.
The footsteps were loud and paced out. Liz felt a knot in her throat. She closed her eyes and pressed her body against the wall.
The adrenaline spiked through her body. She almost couldn’t think straight. She looked up at the sky. She remembered Sam praying for her when he gave her the sandwich. She closed her eyes.
“God, great power, whatever you are, please...”She never prayed, but this was her last hope.“Don’t let him hurt me. Don’t let him hurt my family. Don’t...”
She heard footsteps traveling up the stairs away from her. She waited and listened to hear them reach the next level of the complex. She heard a door open and close and let out a breath of relief.
“Don’t leave me alone now.”She prayed again before leaving her corner.
She almost reached the ground level of the fire escape when she felt a hand cover her mouth and another wrap around her waist. Her feet lifted off the ground, and she tried to scream.
