“What about you?” Liz asked, trying to not twiddle her thumbs from nervousness.

“Think I’ll follow your lead for once,” he said, placing the menu down. A feeling of excitement rang through Liz’s chest. He was trying to flatter her.

The waitress brought Ben his coffee and looked directly at Liz. “What’ll it be tonight, hun?”

Liz was shocked by the sudden change in the waitress’s behavior, although she did know that Ben tended to have that effect on people.

“I’ll do the ham and cheese omelet with a side of bacon.”

The waitress nodded and looked at Ben. “For you, hun?”

Ben didn’t make eye contact with the waitress. Instead, his eyes were fixed on Liz’s. “I think she has the right idea,” he smiled. “I’ll do the ham and cheese too. Side of bacon.”

The waitress rolled her eyes and walked off. Liz laughed quietly. “She hates you,” she whispered.

Ben leaned back in the seat and smiled. “She wouldn’t be the first.”

Liz shook her head and smiled, looking out of the window.

Ben looked out the window as well, and Liz caught a glimpse of him staring at her in the reflection. She looked at him and rested her chin on her hand.

“So.” She paused, staring into his green eyes as he sipped his coffee. “What’s the real reason you brought me here?”

Ben shrugged and looked around the diner. “I didn’t want my informant to starve.”

“Your informant?” Liz asked, laughing. “What a title.”

“It’s better thanmy champagne girl.”

Liz chuckled as she lifted her water cup to her lips. “That’s true.”

“Ask me anything,” Ben said, leaning forward.

Liz put her drink down. “Anything?”

Ben nodded.

“Why are you always so serious? So …”

“Belligerent?”

Liz paused, raising her eyebrows. “Not the word I was going to use, but sure.” She motioned to him. “Belligerent.”

“It comes with growing up in the family. It was the way my father was, and his father, so on and so forth.” He picked up his coffee. “Next question.”

“That’s all I get?” she asked playfully.

“I never told you the answers would be detailed,” he said, taking a sip.

Liz watched as he lifted the cup to his lips. She thought of him sitting naked in the chair across from her. When he stood over her, his cock was at the perfect level with her lips. How he pushed her to the wall with her hands above her head.

Then, she thought of the eyes she saw in the darkness before he appeared. How his irises turned the same shade of green, and fangs grew from his canines. She had to know she wasn’t crazy.

Her face fell, and she looked at him seriously. “The eyes.”

Ben almost spit out his coffee. He coughed as he set the cup back down. “Eyes?”

“The green eyes I saw in my apartment before you appeared. I saw them, and they went away. Then …” She paused. “Your eyes turned the same color, and I swore you grew.”
