“But this is not over,” the Don said, pointing at Ben, his face falling serious. “You make another stunt like that, and you are pulled from security detail.”

Ben knew that meant consequences. Not only would he be pulled from Sinsations, but he would have a target on his back for going against the Don’s orders.

“Understood,” Ben said again.

“As for that girl of yours,” the Don said, leaning back in his chair. “Make sure she doesn’t become trouble and that you don’t get mixed up in it.”

Ben kept silent. He hated when Liz’s name was uttered by anyone in this wretched family that wanted to hurt her. He nodded once more before leaving the lounge.

Ben shut the door to his office and sat in front of his computer. He rubbed his face up and down, sighing. The guilt was beginning to overtake him. He was keeping secrets from everyone around him, and the weight was starting to take full effect.

Liz didn’t know she had a target on her back. The Don had an inkling that Ben had a thing for Liz, but he didn’t know the extent of their relationship. He didn’t trust anyone around him.

Thinking of her in that room with those men made him boil with rage. How could they think they could use her like that, sexualize her and get away with it? He thought of the nerve they must have to treat someone so special that way.

He turned to his computer and began pulling up any file he could to distract himself. All he thought about instead was the way her body looked under her sheets, her smile when he made a stupid joke, and the way she spoke about law school when she was excited. How innocent and peppy she became when she spoke of her dreams.

He thought of how it was his fault she was in this mess. He wished he had never met her, but that wasn’t the way fate intended it. The more he thought about her, the deeper he fell, to the point that he was convinced she was his mate.

A mate, a soul put on this earth to karmically interact with yours in the deepest manner possible. The only person to truly share yourself with. Life had a funny way of throwing curveballs in Ben’s direction, but he never expected this one.

The memory of her in his cousin Angelo’s lap came back to him. His fists balled up on his desk, and he breathed deeply. It was getting harder to control the jealousy. She had already seen his violent side. She didn’t need to be exposed to any more.

A knock on the door startled him.

“Sir?”

“Come in,” Ben yelled firmly, turning to the door and unclenching his fists.

There she was. Elizabeth walked in, dressed for work. The hostess closed the door behind her, and Liz did a little spin. He couldn’t help but laugh.

“Like the outfit?” she asked with a silly grin.

“Love it,” he said, leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms. “Who got it for you?”

“Some guy,” Liz said playfully, dropping her bag in the usual spot.

Ben nodded and grinned. “He has good style.”

“He’s all right,” Liz said, bending down to adjust her shoes.

Ben thought of the Don’s orders to take her to South America as he watched her. He sprang up from his desk and walked up to her briskly, and pulled her in for a kiss.

She seemed shocked at first but relaxed in his arms as she wrapped her arms around his neck. He held her tightly, ignoring the feelings of shame eating him alive.

He pulled back, and she smiled. “What was that for?”

“Just giving you encouragement for your shift,” he said, patting her on the ass.

She laughed before her face fell. “Is everything okay?” she asked, concerned.

“Yes,” he said, lying through his teeth. “I worked everything out.”

“Good,” she said, taking a sigh of relief. “I was worried someone was going to get killed.”

Ben gulped as she reached back down to adjust her shoes. He leaned against the wall and put his hands in his pockets, doing everything he could to cover his nervousness.

“They’ve been pretty quiet lately,” she said, standing straight and wobbling her heel on the ground to make sure it was tight enough.
