“Let’s hope that changes,” he answered, staring at her as she adjusted her hair in the mirror.

“See you at two?” she asked with a smile.

“As always,” he said.

She leaned in to give him a kiss on the cheek before exiting his office. He sighed and looked at the ceiling, knowing he was the biggest dirtbag alive. He solemnly walked over to his desk and tried to distract himself once more.

It didn’t work. Hours had flown by, and all he could do was think about her, his secrets, and the family. He looked at the clock, 2:15. She was late.

His head began to spin. What if something had happened to her? What if they had hurt her? He swore he would ...

“Ben!” Liz said enthusiastically, swinging his door open.

“Shh!” he said, rising from his desk and chuckling. “You’re a spy, remember?”

She mouthed “sorry” as she closed the door behind her.

“What is it?” he said, regaining his composure.

“I was in the poker room, and one of the men approached me.”

His fists begin to ball. He exhaled subtly and forced himself to remain calm. “And?” he asked smoothly.

“They want me to be a champagne girl at a private party,” she said excitedly. He wondered why she seemed so happy about this. Did she have a thing for one of them?

Ben scoffed and sat down. “Absolutely not.”

Liz’s face fell. “Why not?” she asked, irritated.

“You don’t know what they could do when you’re alone with them.”

Liz stepped back from him, crossing her arms. “What’s really going on here?”

“I’m trying to keep you safe,” Ben said, almost glaring at her.

“This ...” she motioned to the room, “wasn’t it the whole reason you brought me here? To get answers?”

“Yes,” Ben said, grabbing some papers from his file cabinet. He needed to move. He was too furious to sit still. “In a safe manner,” he said, sitting back down and organizing the papers.

“Thisissafe,” Liz said. “I’m going to be here at the club. I’m going to beina VIP room with them. They’ll feel safe. It’ll feel like their turf, and maybe if they’re comfortable enough with me ...”

“What does that mean?” Ben said, staring at Liz, his eyes seething with rage.

She looked at him, irritated and confused. “If they trust me enough to talk code around me, or better yet, talk openly without it.”

If she did this and did get the information, her mission would be finished. He would have to follow through on his orders. He had to stall her.

“No,” he said firmly. She scoffed and remained silent while he turned back to his computer. She was silent for so long that he turned back to see if she was still there. She was staring at the wall in disbelief.

“Why am I even here then, Ben?” she turned to him with tears in her eyes.

He stared back, his chest stirring with emotion. He knew she could leave on her own volition at any moment, and then she would certainly be dead. The safest place for her was here, with him.

“You’re right,” Ben said, looking down at the floor. “You’re here to gather information. I just don’t know if this is the best way to do it.”

“Well, where else do you think they’re talking? They’re here almost every night. It has to be at that VIP party,” she said, throwing an arm out to the side.

She was right. There was no other place they would feel safe enough to talk than in that room. He looked at her in her uniform. She was so sexy, and the outfit almost demeaned her because that was all they saw. They didn’t get to see her intelligence or her humor. The person she gave them was fake. The flirting and compliments weren’t real. They were just her job.
