He realized that’s all it was. They were falling for a façade, she would never give them any piece of the true her, but she had decided to show him every real part of her. Since that night in her apartment, she had given him nothing but openness and dedication.

“Fine,” he said, staring at her. “Let’s try it.”

She smiled and walked up to him. “Perfect, I was thinking of ...”

He held a finger up to her. “We do it my way.”

“And what’s that?”

“I’m going with you,” he said, staring up at her intensely.

She paused and looked at him with a question on her face. “You can’t be there.”

“Why not?”

“Ben,” she said, looking down at him with concern. “They’re not going to talk if you’re there.”

Ben put his face in his hands. Of course, they wouldn’t talk if he was there. His mind was spinning so fast he couldn’t even think straight.

He looked at her. She was smart. She had even outsmarted him a few times. He knew she could handle this. He inhaled and closed his eyes, then opened them and exhaled.

“Okay. You can go alone,” he said, looking into her eyes.

“Okay.”

“If something goes wrong ...”

“Come directly here, yeah, I know,” she said with a grin on her face.

He couldn’t help but crack a slight smile.

“All right,” she said, picking up her bag. “I’m going home. Are you coming tonight?”

“Yeah, let me finish up some work here, and I’ll be over,” he said, smiling at her.

“Okay,” she said with a big grin on her face. She grabbed her bag and walked toward the door before turning around to face him.

“Hey,” she said softly. He looked at her.

“What?”

“Thanks,” she said with admiration in her eyes.

“For what?”

“Teaching me how to live life on thewildside.”

“That may be the worst joke I’ve ever heard,” he said through loud laughter.

“It was pretty bad, but it still made you smile.” She pointed at him and grinned. “Text me when you’re at the door.”

“Will do,” he responded.

She opened the door and walked out of his office. He sank into his chair and put his hands over his face. He did everything he could to hold back from screaming.

There was no way out of this, and she was caught in the crosshairs. She had done nothing but try to get some money from a family member. If he had only let her have it or sent someone else to deal with it, maybe they would have let her go, and she wouldn’t be in this mess.

He turned to his computer, and a thought struck him. She didn’t have to go alone, andhe didn’t have to be there. Maybe there was another way around this VIP party nightmare. After all, he was never really going to let her go alone, anyway.
