She looked at him, perplexed. “What are you not telling me?”

He shook his head. “You can’t ask me that,” he said, gulping with nervousness.

“Tough shit,” she said, crossing her arms.

Ben sighed as he looked at the floor. “Liz,” he began softly. “I need you to listen to me right now. Your life is in danger.”

He watched as the seriousness of the situation hit her. Her eyes began watering again.

“I need you to follow my instructions very carefully.”

She placed her hands on his face and leaned her forehead down to touch his. He placed his hand on the back of her neck and kissed her forehead. She pulled back and looked into his eyes. She nodded tearfully. He tried to suppress the knot in his throat.

“Whatever happens, you need to know that you have changed me,” he said, taking her hands again.

“You’ve changed me too,” she said, breathing in sharply.

“Shh,” he said, placing his hand on her chest. “You’re going to be okay.”

“What about you?”

He looked at her, trying his best to keep his composure. “I’ll be fine,” he responded.

She knelt on the floor with him and wrapped her arms around him. He held her tightly. He had never loved like this, to let someone go and release his selfishness of wanting her with him.

“Are you ready to hear my plan?” he asked, pulling back and looking at her.

She wiped the tears from her face and gazed into his eyes, determination returning to them.

“What do I have to do?” she asked.

Chapter18

Ben

Every corner of Ben’s body was debilitated and covered in a blanket of goosebumps that wouldn’t evaporate. He had just killed a member of the Moretti family and revealed himself entirely. Both of which were likely to give him a severe punishment that he wouldn’t soon forget.

He blasted through the streets with Liz in the passenger’s seat, gripping the ceiling and side door for dear life. Her hair was soaking wet from the torture, her sequined dress likely ruined, yet she somehow seemed calm.

“What are you doing?” she said to him evenly.

He shot a glare in her direction. Even with her hair flustered and eyeliner running down her face in big black streaks, she looked ravishing.

“Are you joking?” He glowered.

Liz smiled at him, a sweet, bewitching grin. It made his heart ache and sprout daisies all at the same time.

“You must know by now that I never joke,” she said.

The woman was a goddess, a daydream, and inhuman. She must have been to make him feel so keenly, to summon the urge inside him to leave everything he had devoted his entire life to. She was a witch of some kind, and there he was, ordered to destroy the very thing that made his soul shake.

His face hardened as he turned away from her lovely smile, not wanting to reveal to her the truth about what he was feeling. Ben felt as if it was written on his face, as clear as day, spelling out his endearment toward her like clouds in a big blue sky.

“Let’s get you home and cleaned up,” he said, attempting to steer the subject. “Those bastards have no idea what they’ve done.”

Liz swooned at his war cry, sliding her hand onto his thigh with a sultry exhale.

“Is that so?” she murmured.
