A lot of footsteps.

“Fuck,” Hammer said. He looked at the gun, but three men were on top of him before he could reach it.

Hammer fell to the ground under their weight but quickly got to his feet. He threw his body upward and flung his arms high in the air. The motion sent the bodies flying.

Thud!

Thwap!

Doh!

Each man landed on the ground with a different comic book sound.

Hammer turned to face them. Instead of three, six were now racing at him.

If he had a few minutes, he would have been able to shift, but he was too vulnerable during his shift. He wouldn’t be able to do anything.

Hammer thought fast.

He sucked in gulps of air, inhaling as much oxygen as he could get. When his lungs ballooned to double their size, he released it setting the carbon dioxide on fire with his dragon’s breath.

A six-foot blaze of fire shot out. It crackled in blues, greens, whites, and yellows. The scent of burning wood encircled Hammer as he released all his hate and anger into it. He sprayed the line of fire back and forth.

It danced in front of him with the grace of a ribbon blowing in the breeze.

He could see the gang of men standing in awe, but he wanted them to pay for coming after Charlie.

Hammer took a step forward.

Then another.

And got so close that one goon’s shoe caught on fire.

When the blast of heat dissipated, they dodged the flame.

But Hammer wanted to give them physical suffering. He held some fire in his mouth, determined not to discharge all the power.

He could use it as the attackers grew closer.

The group of thugs spiraled around him, some coming closer than others. Hammer could see the fear and uncertainty in their eyes, but one or two still looked cocky, like they knew they could take an animal.

He had seen it before in prison. They all treated him like a freak and did not understand Hammer’s true power. The only reason why any of those guards could take him was because he had a chip in his neck.

Now, the chip was disabled for shifting.

Now, he could kick some true ass.

The guys ran in from all directions.

With each hit they landed, Hammer protected himself by shifting small parts of his body. His dragon scales broke one guy’s hand. Hammer focused on him first.

He ran up to the man who was howling and holding his wrist. Hammer jumped into the air, flung his elbow back, cinched his fist, and slammed it into the guy’s face.

The guy dropped into unconsciousness.

Someone threw themselves at Hammer’s back.

Hammer fell backward, flat onto the goon. He used his weight to compress the guy into the ground. Hammer heard the cement crack, and the body underneath him had stopped struggling.
