“When?” she asks.

“I’ll book it for next weekend.”

“You’d really put yourself through seven whole days of panic?”

“To get you in my bed? Hell, yeah.”

I can see she’s flattered. Equally, I can see she doesn’t believe I’ll go through with it.

I’ve been afraid of heights since I was a kid. I can’t go up a ladder without having palpitations.

But she’s severely underestimating my desire for her. And how stubborn I am. I’m absolutely determined to get this girl in my bed. And if it means I have to conquer one of my greatest fears, I’m absolutely going to do it.

Chapter Six

Huxley

Victoria, Mack, and I are in one of the club meeting rooms and have just started our weekly Friday lunch when Titus rolls in around 1:15 p.m.

“Sorry I’m late,” he says, taking a seat next to Mack at the table.

“No worries,” I say. “Coffee?”

“Actually, can I have water, please? I’ve just had a coffee with Elizabeth. If I have any more, I’ll have tachycardia all afternoon.”

“Elizabeth?” I pass him a bottle of cold water from the fridge. “Is she coming today?”

“No, she asked me to send her apologies. She’s got some Japanese investors over—I think she brought them here yesterday?”

“Oh yeah, that’s right. I forgot they were staying until Friday.” My heart sinks a little. I was hoping to see her today.

I think she’s avoiding me. I’ve only seen her a couple of times this week—two lunchtime meetings and once yesterday when she brought the investors in for a karaoke evening in one of our bars. I had the misfortune of catching her performance of Adele’sSomeone Like You. The lady has many talents, but unfortunately singing isn’t one of them.

“How is she?” Victoria asks, taking one of the chicken salads on the table. “I thought she looked tired last night.”

“She’s okay.” Titus somehow manages to fit a whole sausage roll in his mouth in one go. “Mind you, we had a very strange conversation,” he says in a muffled voice.

Mack takes a stack of sandwiches and a handful of potato chips. “About what?”

Titus gives him an amused look. “I think you know.”

Mack meets his gaze and grins. “Oh… that.”

“Yeah. Could’ve knocked me down with a feather.” He looks at me. “She must have asked you, surely?”

“Asked me what?”

“About donating.”

My heart shudders to a stop. My gaze slides to Victoria, who’s giving us a puzzled look. “Donating?” she asks. “Are you talking about the SPCA raffle?”

“Not quite,” Mack says. “Elizabeth wants a baby.”

Victoria’s eyes nearly fall out of her head. “What?”

“She’s been to the fertility clinic,” Titus says. “She asked them about a clinic donor, but there’s a three-year wait, can you believe it?”

“Jesus,” Victoria says.
