“What?” Titus says.

“Hux.” Victoria looks baffled. “You get a nosebleed if you stand on a chair.”

“Slight exaggeration.” I scratch the back of my neck. “But I appreciate that I might have painted myself into a corner.”

Titus gives a slow whistle. “Dude, you really have got it bad.”

“It’s kinda romantic,” Victoria says. “And fucking stupid at the same time.”

I glower. “I’ve asked her out pretty much every month for ten years. She won’t go out with me. What was I supposed to do?”

“Give up?” Victoria suggests. “Accept you’ve lost?”

“Yeah, that sounds like something I’d do.”

“How are you feeling?” Mack asks.

“Fucking terrified.”

“But you’re still going through with it?”

I shrug and give him a helpless look. “I can’t think what else to do.”

He meets my eyes for a moment, and then we both smile. Now he’s got Sidnie, he understands the stupid things you do for the woman you love.

“So if you jump, she’s agreed to give you one night?” Victoria asks. “What happens after that?”

“I’ll be so absolutely amazing in bed that she’ll beg to see me again.”

She lifts an eyebrow.

“Yeah,” I say, “it’s a stretch, I know. I’m going to have to pull out all the stops.”

“You mean you’ll actually have to do some foreplay for a change?”

“And pay for the pizza at the end.”

They all snort.

Mack leans back, stretching out his legs. “I don’t quite know why she’s so reluctant to date you. Obviously, what happened back at uni was difficult for her, but the two of you have remained such good friends. Clearly, she’s still attracted to you.”

I turn my pen in my fingers. She asked me not to tell the others what she told me on Valentine’s Day, but we’re a close-knit group, and I know they won’t spread it any further. “She’s had three long-term relationships, and the guys have all broken her heart. Did you know Tim cheated on her?”

“Fuck! Seriously?” Titus says it, but they’re all shocked.

“With Patsy Landingham.”

Victoria holds her hands in front of her chest. “She with the big knockers?”

“That’s the one.”

“Bastard,” Mack says. “I didn’t know.”

“That’s not all. She had problems with Rich,” I won’t go into detail there, “and he sort of turned it all on her, blamed her for everything. And Steve…” I shift in my chair.

“What?” Victoria asks.

I lean forward and glare at the sandwiches. “He hit her.”
