I glare at his back, then lean on the railing and huff moodily. There’s absolutely no way Huxley will ever jump off this building. He’s been afraid of heights ever since I met him. Not just reluctant, but absolutely terrified. I love the guy dearly, but he’s a showman—he performs on a daily basis, like a gorilla beating his chest. He’s done this because he thinks I’ll be impressed and sleep with him even if he backs out. Well, I won’t. He has to keep his side of the bet, too.

I look up at the side of the Sky Tower. Fifty-three floors. Over six hundred feet.

He’s never going to do it.

Not in a million years.

Chapter Seven

Huxley

The elevator doors open, and Mack and I step out into the spacious room. Jamie has stayed down with Elizabeth.

I catch a glimpse of tiled floors, large pillars, big fans, and a waiting area with seats. Then all I can focus on are the huge panes of glass, looking out at the cloudless blue sky.

“You okay?” Mack asks. “You’ve lost all color in your face.”

“I might need the bathroom.”

“Over here.” He steers me toward the Gents’. I push open the door, go into one of the cubicles, and promptly vomit up the contents of my stomach into the toilet.

“Ah, Jesus.” I wait to make sure I’m done, then flush it and go out.

Mack’s leaning against the wall, hands in his pockets. He watches as I wash my hands and splash my face with cold water. I wait for him to sayYou don’t have to do this, Hux.

He doesn’t. When I eventually straighten and take a couple of paper towels, he smiles and hands me a mint from the box in his pocket, then says, “You ready now?”

I toss the paper towels in the bin, pop the mint in my mouth, and lean on the wall opposite. “I don’t think I can do this.”

His unusual eyes are very light. He’s in one of his energetic moods. “I told Elizabeth you were going to do it if I have to push you out.” He grins as my eyes widen in alarm. “It was a joke, don’t worry. They don’t allow spectators in the jump zone.”

I stuff my hands in the pockets of my jeans and hunch my shoulders. “What did you talk to her about?”

“I wanted to make sure that when you do it, she’ll keep her side of the bet.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah.”

I hold his gaze for a moment. His lips curve up.

“What did she say?” I whisper.

“She said of course she will. She just doesn’t believe you’ll do it, because she doesn’t think you want her that much.”

“I do.”

“Of course you do. Why else would you be jumping off a fucking building?”

“I really want to do it,” I say meekly. “I just don’t think my legs will let me walk over there.”

“I know it’s not easy,” he says, reminding me that he did this with Elizabeth, Titus, and a few others a couple of years ago for charity. “The key is to focus on something else. Like your reward.”

“My reward?”

“In about ten minutes’ time, it’ll be all over. Ten minutes of fear in return for what I’m sure will be really fantastic sex.”

I blow out a long breath. “It’s not a bad deal.”
