“It’s an incredible deal. Focus on Elizabeth. The five-foot-one fireball.”

I chuckle. “That about sums her up.”

“Think about how you’re going to ruffle up that neat hairdo and smudge her lipstick.”

I close my eyes, thinking about sinking my hands into her soft brown hair. “Okay.”

“Picture what clothes she’s going to be wearing. And then imagine taking them all off.”

I breathe deeply. “Yeah, that’s working.”

“She’s all yours, dude. She wants to make a baby with you. You’re not going to let a little thing like this stand in the way, are you?”

I think about how it’s going to feel when I make love to her without a condom. How I’ll be able to look into her eyes as I come and know I could have made her pregnant. I want to do that for her.

And for myself, obviously.

I open my eyes. “All right, I’m ready.”

“Come on, then. Let’s do it.”

We go out, and Mack leads me over to the check-in point. Luckily I’m kept busy then—I have to take a breath alcohol test, and they weigh me to make sure I’m within the maximum limit. I think I make a joke about looking like Jabba the Hutt and make them all laugh, but I can’t be sure as my brain’s not firing properly at the moment. They give me a flying suit, like a jumpsuit that zips up the front. Finally, I have to step into the harness, which they tighten all over until it’s snug enough so I can’t slip out of it.

Despite saying spectators aren’t allowed in the jump zone, Mack’s obviously slipped the guy a few bucks because he comes through the barrier with me, right up to the point where the path leads out of the door onto the metal walkway.

I turn and face him.

He smiles. “She’s waiting for you, Hux.”

“I have literally never been this scared in my life.” Oh God, please don’t let me vomit all over the assistant.

“Being courageous doesn’t mean that you aren’t afraid, it means actingdespitebeing afraid. I have absolute faith in you, Oliver Huxley. You came up here and you’re going to do this even though you’re terrified. That’s how much you love this girl. Go and show her.”

I swallow hard. “Think about the sex.”

“Think about the sex. I’ll see you at the bottom.”

I blow out a breath, nod, turn, and walk along the path and out onto the metal platform. I feel as if I’m walking on a planet with intense gravity, as it seems to take more effort than usual to move my feet.

The assistants there stop me and check my harness several times, then finally clip the huge wire to the back. They talk me through what’s going to happen, which I don’t really take in because now my brain has completely shut down.

I’m trembling all over. Why on earth did I think I could do this? I’d rather have fallen into a box of spiders. Or maybe not. Don’t think about spiders. Or clowns. Or needles.

Think about Elizabeth. I close my eyes as the cool breeze blows across my face. I’m doing this for her. To show her how serious I am about being with her. Mack says she’ll definitely go through with it. A few seconds to jump, for a whole night with her.

She just doesn’t believe you’ll do it, because she doesn’t think you want her that much.

I open my eyes and look over my shoulder at the assistant who’s holding onto the harness behind me.

“Ready?” he asks.

I nod.

“Go for it,” he says.

For a second I can’t let go of the railing. It’s like my hands have been Superglued to it. I peel them off and grip hold of my harness.

“Think of the sex,” Mack yells from behind me.
