“What’s good for the goose, Doctor…” I murmur, easing his slumping body onto the floor as he blacks out before I turn.

Violet’s body slamming into mine as I wrap her in my arms, “Vincent! I thought he was gonna-”

“It’s alright now… It's alright, Violet,” I tell her soothingly. Stroking her hair and turning my body to shield her from seeing him.

“Wha- What do you think he was going to do?” She asks me pleadingly, as if I have some kind of inside knowledge. And I guess, in a way, I do.

“I think he was gonna do something that would’ve cost him more than his job…” I remark. “And yeah. Now would be a good time to call the cops,” I add.

“It’s time to put all this to an end.”

Chapter 14

Violet

“ButDean Reinhold?” I whine, looking up at Vincent.

Shocked but more confused than anything. And terrified out of my wits until I’m convinced it’s over.

Knowing that Vincent’s kept his promise to keep me safe. Even if he did leave it until the very last minute.

“How’d he get in?” Vincent rasps.

“He- He knocked on the door, said you were with him… I opened it without thinking and-” I try to say but end up sobbing into his chest instead. Feeling like an idiot for falling for it.

“It’s over now,” Vincent tells me again. The Dean groaning and rolling around by the time the police arrive. Vincent eager to get me home, but also taking a keener interest in making sure justice is served.

An aging cop in a cheap suit with a badge on a lanyard he holds up introduces himself as a detective. “Weyland.” He clips, sounding bored. Scanning the room and then me before he frowns.

Agreeing to let Vincent take me home as long as we can both be reached to answer more questions. And only after we’ve given a convincing account of our side of the story so far.

“Although, I think this is all we’ll need to get that warrant now,” The detective muses. “We’ve been keeping an eye on Dr. Reinhold here, his buddy too.”

“Lutz?” Vincent asks, surprising the detective.

“Yeah, Lutz.” He confirms,. Narrowing his eyes on Vincent. “Looks like we might’ve cracked a lot of cold cases too, if we’re right.” He adds cryptically.

I feel myself shiver, needing to be away from here. Needing Vincent, alone.

“You know where to reach me,” Vincent finally says after filling local law enforcement in on what happened. Dean Reinhold shaking his head and still groaning as he's led away.

My landlord, or should I say ex-landlord, along with rubber necking neighbors are all pushed back and told to move along by uniformed officers.

“What cold cases?” I ask Vincent once we’re back outside. He stops briefly to tell me but ends up leaning down and picking something up instead.

“I’ll tell you sometime…” He says, handing me a crumpled bunch of flowers. Pocketing a card or letter.

“You might wanna let Niles down easy,” he adds. If it weren’t for him about to deliver these, Reinhold wouldn’t have gotten within fifty feet of you.”

My brow furrows in question. “Why would Niles wanna give me- Oh…” I realize aloud. Joining the dots between Valentine's day tomorrow and Niles bringing me flowers.

Vincent doesn’t say anything, but he doesn’t have to.

His sulking look says it all.

“Ew.” I all I have to tell him, setting his mind at ease because as sweet a gesture as it might be. I never found Niles or anyone else at college remotely attractive.

Except Vincent, of course.
