I pull her onto my knee, the papers she has for me to sign tumbling from her hands. But all that can wait.

“I love you, Violet.” I remind her, kissing her and stroking her hair.

Cherishing her more than ever now I know just how different things could’ve been if I didn't follow my gut and watch her like a hawk.

“I love you to…” She echoes back, pecking my cheek and hopping off my knee to scoop up the papers.

I’ll never keep anything from her, not ever.

Except this.

“How about I sign these and we call it a day?” I suggest, forcing a smile. Already feeling better now Violet’s within arm’s reach.

“What do you have in mind?” She asks coyly, giving me an innocent look.

“How does Mexico sound?” I ask.

Smiling wider when she agrees instantly. And fishing in my pocket, I pull out a pair of her panties.

“I’ve already packed,” I joke, but right now. Leaving all of this behind and taking her anywhere but here with me is all that matters.

Making just one quick stop by the boiler room, tossing the file into the furnace and watching it dissolve to flaming ashes in seconds, I don’t feel anything.

I did what I had to, survived what I did. All to be there when Violet needed me most.

I didn’t turn into a psycho professor… I protected her from them. I just wasn’t there for all of them. Could only save one.

My one. My Violet.

And now we have each other, there’s no more bad dreams. And every ghostly shadow from my past is gone.

It’s just us from now on.

Mrs. Violet Valentine and me. Forever.

Extended Epilogue

Violet

Three Months Later…

“Honey! We’ll be late.” I call up the stairs. The sound of running water telling me that not only is Vincent still showering, he’s in there without me.

As his secretary, I’m annoyed he’s made us late for another book signing. Something he only agreed to because I wanted him to do it because I’m so damned proud of him.

As his wife to be, I’m not surprised by his lax attitude towards success. He meant every word about devoting all his time and energy to just the two of us.

The thought makes me run my hand over my belly. Promising myself I’ll tell him.

Right after the signing… We’ll get that out of the way and then I can tell him…

But after another ten minutes, I feel like somethings not right.

I creep up the stairs, calling out to Vincent, but only the sound of running water answers me.

Pushing the bedroom door ajar, I see him on the toilet. Naked holding something between his huge fingers.

He’s smiling like a lunatic and before I can open my mouth to ask him id he's okay, he looks up.
