“Go and . . .” she shrugged, “I don’t know . . . find something to wear tonight. You’re not going to shift naked in front of strangers. Pick something loose, something you don’t like much because it will go to pieces. And I will go make some wolfsbane potion.”

“Oh, not that again.” My shoulders slumped down.

“It’s not for you. It’s for Finn. To calm his wolf so he doesn’t fight me.”

“Mom, listen.” I got up from my seat and sat next to her on the couch. “I’m going to be fine. And,” I took her hand and squeezed it between mine two, “I need to ask you something.”

“What is it, honey?” She turned to me with a wary look.

“When you channel Finn’s powers, please be careful.”

“Don’t worry. I’m not going to kill him.” She said with a bitter smile. “He kinda grew on me.”

“Yeah,” I sighed.

“Spencer, I would do anything to make sure you survive this shift, but I wouldn’t kill an innocent man who is risking his life to help us.” She covered my hand with her free one. “Especially the one who holds my daughter's heart.” She pulled me in and kissed me on the temple. Then she quickly turned her face away, got up, and went inside.

The pain I caused to the two most important people in my life made me feel even more miserable. I needed to turn my thoughts to something positive, remember the best moments of my life, and draw strength from them.

Finn.

He brought so much happiness into my life in the short time we’ve known each other. With him, I felt loved and understood. And now, in the most terrifying moment of my life, he was the one I felt safe with.

I got up and headed to the woods. To the river, where we first kissed. Where we were both happy.

FINN

I made my way to the study where James and Liam waited for me, sitting on the couches: James sipping soda from the can, and Liam looking through one of the grimoires.

“Nice,” I glared at Liam.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean your dickish behavior.”

“I apologized, didn't I?” He spread his hands, making an innocent face. “And what did you expect? I was surprised. You could’ve called me and explained what was going on, but instead, you just sent a cryptic message.”

“Clare doesn’t trust anybody. She’s freaking out.”

“Can’t blame her.”

“I thought she would feel safer if she saw you first. Well, that plan backfired.”

Liam rolled his eyes.

“So,” he nodded toward the pile of grimoires on the table, “what is this? Are you saying you found something in here that can break the curse?”

“No. We don’t know how to break the curse. But we believe we might have found a loophole.”

“I can feel your dismay, Finn.” He closed the grimoire and dropped it on top of the others. “You have feelings for that girl.”

“I do,” I sank into the armchair.

“Have you seen the girl?” James shrugged. “Who wouldn’t?”

I gave him an annoyed look. “Not everything is about the looks, you dumb ass.”
