“Why did you let yourself get so attached to her?” Liam said in a quiet, sympathetic voice. “If this ends badly—and I’m afraid it will—your heart will break in a completely different way than if she was just a stranger.”

“You think I don’t know that?” I clenched my teeth. “That’s why I’m ready to do anything, ANYTHING I can to make sure she survives.”

“Where did you find her?” asked James. “There hasn't been one . . .” he glanced at Liam, “for how long?”

“As far as I know, for more than fifty years. And the witches found out about the last one only after she died during the shift.” Liam turned to me with a questioning look. “How did you know who she was?”

“I didn’t at first. I was driving home from New Orleans—”

“New Orleans?” James interrupted me. “And you didn’t tell me?”

“Not now, James.” Liam cut him off.

“Like I said, I was on my way home. I hit the road early in the morning after a sleepless night and got tired halfway through. So I stopped at the motel in a small town, and when I went to have a bite to eat, I sensed her. You see, you were right, I shouldn’t have looked for her. We always avoided meeting wolves. But since there were no packs even remotely close to that place, I decided to check on the shifter, thinking that if he was like us, alone and lost. I didn’t know that it was a girl until I found her. I didn’t talk to her at first. But after watching her that day, I found out that she wasn’t even eighteen yet. That’s when I got curious. You know we don’t sense potentials. And I felt a connection to her I couldn’t explain. After talking to her the first time, I still didn’t know she was a hybrid. And what was even more strange was that she had no idea either.”

“When was this?” With a curious look on his face, Liam leaned forward.

“A month ago. On the last full moon. She was in pain for three days. When I told her she was a werewolf and that after her birthday she will turn for her first time, she thought I was a nutcase. I didn't realize what was going on until I spoke to her mother. That’s when everything became clear. They were all alone, always on the run, hiding from packs and covens. Clare was afraid that if Spencer knew that she was a werewolf too, she would find out about the curse. So she hid the truth from Spencer her entire life.” I sighed. “Clare was going crazy from the thought of losing her daughter, and Spencer was terrified after learning the truth. I couldn’t just leave her to suffer alone. You know we don’t do that to our kind.”

“No. Of course, not. You did the right thing.”

“And the more time we spent together, the more we . . . This isn’t just some . . .”

“I know. But you do realize that even if she makes it through, she will become the heir of Great Alpha and she will still be in danger?”

“I do. But she doesn’t. I mean, she knows she’ll become the heir of Great Alpha, but she doesn’t know the part that every pack and coven will try to catch and kill her. So how about you don’t mention it just yet?”

Liam heaved a breath and leaned back again.

“Okay,” he nodded. “Tell us about the loophole.”

I told them about the bracelet and our plan to recreate the enchantment to siphon Spencer’s magic, and then about Clare channeling my powers.

“Are you out of your mind?” Liam stared at me. “She would do anything to save her daughter, and if she doesn’t stop in time, she’ll siphon you dry, and she might kill you.”

“You think I don’t know that?” I frowned at him. “I’m ready to take the chance.”

“Let’s call Alister.”

“You’re joking,” James scoffed. “That selfish, arrogant bastard?”

“I know he’s a piece of shit who thinks that we should get on our knees before him, but he’s a hundred and thirty years old. He was there when the first and only hybrid girl survived. Maybe he knows something else that can help. This isn’t time for pride.”

“No, it’s not.” I sighed. “That’s why I already did. A couple of weeks ago. He said he was just a ten-year-old kid then, and he doesn't remember anything.”

“He’s lying. I’m sure of it,” said James. “I can imagine what a huge deal it was, and it couldn’t just pass unnoticed without gossip and tall tales. Some of which,” he stuck out his index finger, “could be true.”

“Lying or not, that’s his answer. And I’m not surprised. He survived all this time by keeping to himself, and I knew that even if he did remember something, he would prefer to keep his mouth shut.”

“Forget about it.” Liam raised his hand, dismissing the subject. “Let’s get to the point. How can we help?”

“First, we have to prepare the circle.” I glanced at James. “Did you bring what I asked for?”

“Yep. A whole box of big candles, and white spray paint.”

“Okay. What else?” asked Liam.

“After Clare will suck my powers, it might take me some time to gather my strength back. So I’ll need you to keep Spencer in check if she . . .” I cleared my throat, “whenshe turns. To make sure she doesn’t attack Clare or leave the property’s borders. You know how dangerous it could be.”
