“It’s good there are no packs nearby,” said James.

“It’s not just that. She could hurt someone. And, by the way, I did sense a wolf in Asheville the other day. Could be just some passerby, but—”

“Wait a minute.” Liam’s eyebrows furrowed. “I sensed one too. When I stopped by a store on my way here to buy some water.”

“Where exactly?”

“Weaverville.”

“Fuck. That’s only ten minutes away.”

“Calm down. You know that no wolf in his right mind will show up at other shifters' property alone and uninvited. And even if he did? That’s what we’re here for.”

“Right.”

At least that’s what I said. But it didn’t seem right to me. Of course, it could be just some rogue wolf wandering around. But it was the timing that made it look suspicious. Why did he show up after Spencer arrived? What if it was me who led him to her? Was I putting Spencer in danger?

“Is there anything else?” Liam pulled me out of my thoughts.

“No. I think that’s all.”

“Then, let’s get on with it.”

He and James got up. I picked up the grimoire that had the image of the bracelet in it and followed them outside.

We came out to the porch. Spencer and Clare weren’t there, and I thought that they probably took my advice and went for a walk.

James pulled out the box with candles out of his trunk, I grabbed the plastic bag with the spray paint, and the three of us headed to the backyard. Crossing the living room, I heard a clicking noise coming from the kitchen.

“Take those to the barn.” I handed the bag to Liam. “I’ll be right there. I just need to check on Spencer.”

“Not just check. Go. Spend some time with your girl. She needs you.”

“Yeah, man.” James glanced back at me. “Don’t worry, we got this.”

“Clare, where’s Spencer?” I asked as I walked into the kitchen, where she stood at the counter, stirring a mixture of wolfsbane and water in a jar with a long spoon.

“Isn’t she in her room?” Her hand stopped moving as she looked up at me, a little startled.

“Clare, it's just a question. I’ll go check.”

But after I found Spencer’s room empty, I came back and told Clare that she was probably in the woods.

“She could be.” Clare sighed. “I think she needed some time alone.”

“I think I know exactly where she is. I’ll go find her and make sure she’s okay.”

I made my way to the woods and headed to the river.

ChapterTwenty

SPENCER

I lay in the clearing with my eyes on the sky, thinking of Alex, imagining her sunbathing on one of Savannah's beaches.

Then my thoughts traveled back to graduation, then Brian, and then to Finn. To the day I first met him when he stood up to Brian for me after the party and then told me I was a werewolf.

I remembered the day in the coffee shop when I asked him for proof that he was a werewolf and he showed me his gorgeous wolf’s eyes for the first time. Our conversations on the phone all night long during the full moon. And everything after that until the moment we kissed in this clearing for the first time.
