“You think I’m cute.”

I chuckled.

“And you’re happy. Like really happy, aren’t you?”

I sighed. “Yeah. No denying that.”

He clasped my chin and brought my lips to his for another kiss. “Wish you could stay the night.”

“Me too.”

“I think we’re ready to take our relationship to the next level,” Duke said.

“We just took it to the next level when you, ya know…”

“What?” He blinked. “What did I do?”

I blushed.

“You’re hilarious, you know that, right? When have you ever been shy? Furthermore, you’ve got a dirtier mouth than a trucker and you can’t even sayanal sex?”

“Oh my God, stop.” I blushed harder. “I just didn’t expect to like it so much, okay?”

“Baby, you’re gonna like everything we do together.” He grasped my hips and hauled me toward him.

“You make me feel safe enough to explore everything,” I admitted. “Thank you for that.”

I kissed his lips.

“As for taking our relationship to the next level, I was referring to something else…” he said.

“What?”

“I think it’s time we take Waverly to Mama Leonardi’s.”

“You think we’re ready for that kind of commitment?” I teased. “Taking my sister to our place?”

“Our place,” he said gruffly. “I like that. And yeah, I’m ready for that kind of commitment if you are.”

“I am.”

He raised his brows.

“Don’t look so surprised. You grew on me. It only took the better part of a decade, but there it is.”

Duke tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. “You were worth the wait.”

I leaned forward and kissed him again. “I’ll text when I get home.” I tossed my dress into the passenger seat, along with my purse and the cake.

Waverly wasn’t back by the time I made it home. I shot her a text to let her know there was piece of cake for her in the fridge. The house was too quiet without her in it.

I went into the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror. I had whisker burns on my cheeks and neck, and my eyes were bright and my face was flushed.

Smirking, I reached for the small bottle of moisturizer on the edge of the sink. I fumbled with the bottle and it clattered to the floor. I bent over to retrieve it when something sticking out from behind the toilet caught my eye.

With a frown, I touched it. It was a piece of paper taped to the back of the tank. I grabbed it—realizing quickly that it wasn’t a piece of paper, but an envelope.

I flipped it open and gasped at the crisp bills. There were hundreds, fifties, and twenties. Some tens. I took it out and counted it. It was nearly four thousand dollars.
