Four thousand dollars hidden in an envelope behind the toilet.

Four thousand dollars that didn’t belong to me.

Four thousand dollars that I couldn’t account for.

I shoved the money into the envelope and marched out into the living room. I tossed it down onto the coffee table and then riffled through my purse for my phone.

“You’re home?” Duke asked after answering on the first ring.

“I’m home.”

“You sound weird. Shit, I knew it. I knew I took it too far. I—”

“No,” I interrupted. “This isn’t about you and me. I…Duke, I found an envelope of money taped to the back of the toilet.”

He paused for a moment. “Waverly’s?”

“Yes. I assume so. I have no idea why the hell she’d have that kind of mone—oh God, what if it’s Dylan’s and he’s into something illegal?”

“How much is in the envelope?”

“Four grand.”

He whistled.

“I know.” I rubbed my temple. “This is bad, right? I mean, where the fuck is a fifteen-year-old getting that kind of cash?”

“You’re thinking the worst. You’ve got to calm down.”

“How do you know I’m thinking the worst?”

“BecauseI’mthinking the worst. And if it is the worst, I’ll kill someone to protect her—”

The sound of a key in the lock in the front door turned my attention from the conversation.

“She’s home. I’ll call you later.”

I hung up and tossed my phone aside.

And then I waited.

Waverly came inside, her face blooming in happiness when she saw me. “Did you wait to eat your slice of cake so we could eat it together?”

“I didn’t eat my cake.”

She frowned and closed the door. “You’re not in your wedding clothes.”

“Don’t change the subject.”

“We were talking about wedding cake. Ergo, wedding clothes, wedding cake, by transitive property—”

I held up the envelope.

Her face slackened and then went white. “You found my money.”

“It’s yours, then?”

She nodded. “But it’s not what you think.”
