Duke and Savage would protect her. They’d figure out a way to make it so that she didn’t get pulled into the system.

They’ll protect her.

They’d have to because I wasn’t going to be there to…

“Willa?”

“Hmm?”

“Can I…do you mind if lean against you? Would that be okay?”

I scooted my body closer to hers and we pressed against one another. “Yeah, Sailor. That would be okay.”

Chapter37

Sailor dozedoff after a few minutes of leaning up against me. I heard her breaths even out and knew her body was trying to work the drugs out of her system. I was glad she could sleep through what was going on.

I couldn’t.

I cried silent tears, trying not to wake the young woman trapped next to me.

I was so stupid. I hadn’t been paying attention to my surroundings while I’d gotten out to examine my car…

My car.

Where was my car now?

My phone?

I felt for my engagement ring. It was gone. No doubt my kidnappers had taken it, thinking they could make an easy buck by selling it.

After they soldme.

I was under no illusions about what was taking place.

You think it’s not going to happen to you.

You think you’re safe.

You think you’re special.

You think the world gives a damn about you.

Why?I wanted to shout. Why now? Why give me everything I’ve ever wanted only to rip it away from me?

My life would be truncated, ending before it had truly begun.

My abduction would destroy the people I loved. They’d wonder what happened to me. They’d never find closure.

A muffled gunshot rang out and suddenly the truck lurched hard to one side, causing me to crash into Sailor. There was a loud screech and then a forceful bang as the truck came to a stop at a sharp angle, like we were suddenly no longer on level ground.

“What happened? Where are we?” Sailor demanded, suddenly awake.

“I don’t know, but something’s wrong.”

“What’s going on?” she pleaded.

“I heard a gunshot. Be quiet for a minute.”
