Sailor huddled close to me and I heard the muted sounds of shouting, followed by doors being wrenched open and then slammed shut outside.

I instinctively scooted lower, hunching my body over Sailor, trying to shield her. In that moment, Sailor was my sister and I would do whatever I needed to in order to protect her. Even if it was futile.

The other woman in the space with us was still unconscious, and I assumed that the drugs were too strong for her to wake up.

Suddenly, everything was quiet.

Sailor was shaking against me. I tried to remain still, my senses on high alert at impending danger.

A metal rolling door screeched open, but I didn’t hear any voices or footsteps. In a split-second decision, I decided to trust that whoever was out there was a better option for us than the shit bags that had abducted us.

“We’re in here!” I yelled. “Help!”

I kicked out my legs and hit a wall. When I did, it made a resounding thud. A few moments later I heard heavy footsteps and then suddenly a door opened, and flash of light shone directly into my eyes.

I burrowed my head into Sailor to hide against the brightness.

“Willa!”

I peered up at the sound of his voice. “Duke?”

“Fuck,lower the light,” Duke snapped.

The beam dropped, and as my eyes began to adjust to my surroundings, I saw Acid holding the flashlight.

My panic immediately cleared when I realized we’d been rescued.

We wouldn’t be sold.

We wouldn’t have things done to us that made us wish for death.

I glanced at Sailor, who was still shaking and huddled up next to me. In the light, I realized she’d found a way to remove her own hood at some point. Her blonde hair was a tangled mess, but she didn’t look injured.

“How did you know we were here?” I croaked, looking at Duke.

Duke’s face was grim as he pulled out his knife. Sailor smushed herself deeper into me.

“It’s okay,” Duke said. “We’re here to help.”

“Sailor,” I said. “This is Duke. My fiancé.”

Sailor lifted her head and whatever she saw on Duke’s face made her nod and wriggle away from me. Duke slashed the ties at her ankles and at her wrists, setting her free. Then he quickly did the same to me.

He stuck the knife back in its sheath and immediately cradled my cheeks in his hands, his eyes swimming with emotion.

“Duke,” Acid said, pulling our attention away from one another.

Acid had shined the light to the far side of the tiny compartment where we’d been held. It was the other woman.

She wasn’t moving.

Acid crouched down next to her, gently tugged off her hood, and felt for a pulse. He shook his head. “She’s gone.”

“No, no, no, no—” I murmured in shock.

“I’m going to be sick,” Sailor said, and then vomited next to the corpse.

I thought for sure the other girl with us would wake up…that the drugs would run through her system the way they had through mine, but I hadn’t been able to protect her.
