“Willa…” She burst into tears in a way that was completely unlike her.
I waited for her to cry it out for a minute, and when she started sniffling, I said, “I’m okay.”
“You’re not hurt?”
“No.”
She let out a sigh of relief. “I’m so glad. So, so glad. When you didn’t show up at school, I called Duke. You’reneverlate.”
“You’re the reason they found me,” I said.
“Where were you? What happened?”
“I’ll tell you about it later,” I said.
“Will you—are you going to come over to Darcy’s and get me?”
“I don’t know what time we’ll be getting back to Waco,” I said evasively.
“Probably around four in the morning,” Duke supplied.
I nodded to let him know I’d heard him. “We won’t be getting back until early tomorrow morning, like four in the morning, or later.”
“Where are you?”
“Laredo.”
“Laredo! What the hell?”
“Get some sleep,” I said. “I’ll see you in the morning, okay?”
“Okay,” she said quietly. “I—I love you, Willa.”
“Love you, too.”
I hung up with her and handed Duke his cell phone. He slipped it into his pocket.
“When we get back to Waco, you can just drop me off at the bus station,” Sailor said. “I can walk home from there.”
“You really think we’re going to drop you off at a bus station so you can walk home alone—after we just rescued you from being sold as property in Mexico?” Acid demanded from the back seat.
“Acid,” I warned.
“When we get back to Waco, you’re going to see Doc,” Acid explained. “She’s the club doctor.”
“They didn’t touch me,” Sailor announced. “I mean they didn’t…you know. They just drugged me.”
Duke’s knuckles loosened on the steering wheel ever so slightly. “Acid’s right. You’re getting checked out by Doc.”
“Okay,” Sailor said. “So, who were they? The men that took us?”
“Cartel,” Acid said.
“Acid,enough,” I snapped. “She’s only sixteen.”
“Enough?” he snapped back. “The girl was just fucking rescued from being trafficked. She has a right to know why we did what we did.”
“Duke, back me up here. Sailor’s the same age as Waverly,” I stated. “Would you tell Waverly any of this?”
