“Yeah, he did.”

Sailor was quiet for a moment and then said, “I wish I had someone who loved me enough to come save me.”

Chapter38

Duke openedthe driver’s side door of the van and climbed in. “Last chance to use the bathroom. We’re going to be on the road for a while.”

“I don’t have to go,” Sailor said.

“No?” Duke raised his brows. “You’re not going to make me pull over in ten minutes? Acid said he gave you a bottle of water and you downed the entire thing.”

“I don’t have to…crap. I totally have to go. Power of suggestion I guess,” Sailor announced.

I unlatched my seat belt and got out of the van so Sailor could use the side of the highway as a bathroom. She hopped down and ambled off toward the ditch behind the furniture truck.

“Sit in the middle,” Duke said.

“But my legs. I’m twice as long as her.”

“Please, Willa.” His tone darkened. “It’s taking all my willpower not to lose my shit. Just…be close to me.”

“Okay,” I said. I settled in the middle seat and took the bottle of water he offered me. I drank a few sips. It was tepid but soothed my dry throat immediately.

Sailor climbed back into the van, said nothing about the new seating arrangement, and buckled herself in.

“Everyone good?” Duke asked.

We nodded.

“Are you hungry?” I asked Sailor.

“No.” She looked out the window. Her stomach rumbled.

“Liar,” I said with a laugh.

Sailor shot me a sheepish smile.

“There are some protein bars in the glove box. Sorry, we can’t stop for food.”

Acid trekked over to the van and climbed into the seat behind us before shutting the sliding door. “We can take off. Prez and Boxer will take care of the truck.”

“What about the girl?” I asked, turning my head to look at Acid.

“Girl’s dead,” he said flatly. “They’re going to pull her out of the truck, set the two men and the truck on fire, and let the authorities handle it.”

Sailor made a small noise of distress. I patted her thigh in comfort. As Duke started the van, I looked out the window to the side of the road, watching Boxer and Colt get to work.

“Where’s Waverly?” I asked once we were on the road.

“With Darcy and Gray at their house.” He handed me his cell. “Call her.”

It was just after eleven, but I knew she wouldn’t be asleep with what was going on.

I quickly dialed her.

“Duke! Is she—did you find her?”

“Hey, Little Punk,” I said, feeling tears prick my eyes at the sound of her voice.
