I pulled back to look at him. I didn’t even need to say anything, we spoke without words, a language we knew by heart because we’d known each other so long.

I could hear Sailor and Waverly’s chatter across the near empty parking lot. Savage stood near them, shooting them looks and rolling his eyes.

Duke didn’t drop his arms from around me and I didn’t move away.

Sailor came to a stop and wrinkled her nose at us. “Are you guys always like this?”

“Like what?” I asked in amusement.

“In love and stuff,” Sailor said.

“Worse,” Savage mocked. “They’remuchworse. Right, Waverly?”

“Right-o,” Waverly agreed with a nod. “If this pint of ice cream doesn’t make me puke, they sure will. But Duke makes my sister happy, so I’ll allow it.”

After we got home and the groceries were organized in the fridge, Duke looked at Savage and said, “I’ve got to take care of something. You in?”

“Yup.” Savage looped an arm around Waverly’s shoulder. “Later, Little Punk.”

“Get off me, delinquent.” She zipped out from underneath his arm, grabbed Sailor’s hand, and dragged her toward the bedroom.

“What thing do you have to take care of?” I asked as Duke grasped my hip.

“A thing.” He shrugged and then kissed my lips. “Don’t worry about it. You’re staying here, right? You’re not going anywhere?”

I frowned. “No. I’m not going anywhere. Why?”

“I just want you make sure you’re safe,” he said gruffly. “You’re safe if you stay here.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” I promised.

He kissed me one final time before pulling away.

“And I like you both as friends, so I’m just going to hug you instead of letting you suck on my tongue,” Savage said, embracing me.

“You’re such a class act,” I said as I squeezed him tight.

I made sure the door was locked and then I leaned against it.

“You were right, the fairy fort is ridiculously cool. Even though we’re totally too old for it,” Sailor said as she and Waverly came back into the living room.

“Totally too old for it.” Waverly shot me a look and winked.

“You guys don’t have a couch,” Sailor remarked.

“We’ll get a new one when we move into the house,” I said in way of explanation. “The closing is official. It’s ours.”

“Oh, fuck yes!” Waverly yelled.

“Waverly,” I said with a sigh. “The cursing, seriously?”

“That’s okay, I have a sailor mouth,” Sailor quipped. “Get it, because my name is Sailor?”

“Yeah, it’s not funny if you have to explain it,” Waverly teased.

“It’s still funny,” Sailor assured her.

I shook my head at their easy comradery. “You guys dive into the chocolate. I’m blowing up the air mattress and taking a nap. Only wake me if the house is on fire.”
