Chapter42

The soundof the front door shutting was enough to rouse me from my nap. I didn’t move my body, instead only turning my head slightly.

Savage only had one decibel, and it was loud.

I reluctantly sat up and took a moment to get my bearings. I wondered how long I’d slept for, but I hadn’t taken my phone to bed with me and didn’t know the time.

“Sleeping Beauty,” Savage greeted when I popped into the living room.

“Not so beautiful,” Waverly teased. She touched the corner of her mouth and inclined her head to indicate she was referencing mine. “Drool.”

“Shut up,” I grumbled, hastily turning and stumbling to the bathroom. As I was splashing cool water on my face, there was a knock on the door.

“It’s me,” Duke said.

“Come in.” I snatched the hand towel from the rack and dabbed my face.

Duke opened the door and came in, despite the small bathroom.

“I can’t wait to move into the new house,” I said. “We need the room.”

“Can you hold out for two weeks?” he asked, cradling my jaw.

I tilted my head up toward his. “Two weeks? What happens in two weeks?”

“We officially close and get the keys.”

I smiled. “I can wait. It’ll be tight for a bit, but we’ve done worse.A lotworse.”

He left the bathroom first and I trailed after him. Sailor and Waverly were still sitting at the kitchen table while Savage stood by. It was awkward in the house without a couch. They’d blown up the other air mattress and set it in front of the TV.

“Hey, Sailor,” Duke said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a cell phone. “Think fast.” He tossed it at her and she caught it.

“What’s this?” she asked in confusion.

“A cell phone. Obviously,” Duke said lightly.

“Yeah, but why are you giving it to me?” Her brow was marred, and she turned the phone over.

“Family plan, kid.” Duke looked at me and winked, and then glanced back toward Sailor. “We put you on it.”

“Oh.” Her voice sounded thick. “I—uhm—are you sure?” She peered at me when she asked the question.

I swallowed my own emotion. Duke had blindsided me with this—in the best possible way. “Yeah, Sailor. We’re sure.”

“We paid your dad a visit,” Savage announced. “Told him you were going to be spending a lot of time over here with Waverly. We said we’d make sure you got to school and everything. But if you want to get your clothes, I’ll take you over there to pack.”

“I’ll help,” Waverly said, jumping up. “Give me your phone.”

Sailor handed it over. Waverly quickly typed a few things and then handed it back to her. “I put my number in your favorites.”

“Thanks,” Sailor croaked. She cleared her throat. “Yeah, I’d love to get my stuff.”

“We can swing by Jessica’s to pick her up,” Savage suggested. “And you can show Sailor your furniture.”

“Good idea!” Waverly said in excitement. “You’ll love Jess. She’s a rebel, too.”

The two of them headed to the front door.
