I climbed into bed shirtless and turned off the lamp. I reached out for Willa, and she immediately scooted closer and put a hand on my chest. She made me feel like a god when I was around her.

Her breathing began to slow, and she fell asleep.

An hour later, I was wiping away her tears and cradling her in my arms as the screams from her nightmare turned to whimpers.

“You’re awake,” Willa said the moment I entered the kitchen.

I grunted and headed for the coffee pot. I filled a cup and then took a seat at the kitchen table next to her. “So are you.”

She sipped her coffee.

“You sure you don’t want the sleeping pills?” I asked as I reached for her plate of toast and took the crust that she’d discarded.

Willa paused. “Another nightmare?”

“You don’t remember?”

“No. Sorry,” she muttered.

“Why are you apologizing?”

“Because my nightmares affect you—and your sleep—too.”

“Fuck that. I don’t care about that. I care aboutyou.”

She took another sip of her coffee. “I’ll go see Doc today.”

I nodded.

“Where are the kids?” I asked.

“Still sleeping, I imagine.” She grinned. “Letting them bunk together in that apartment was either pure genius or the worst idea we’ve ever had.”

“It’s great for you and me,” I quipped. “We get a lot more privacy.”

“Want some pancakes?” she asked.

“I’d love some pancakes,” I said with a smile.

She got up and began moving around the kitchen. While she was in the middle of flipping the first pancake, the back door opened and Waverly and Sailor strolled in.

“Pancakes!” Waverly said, moving toward her sister and laying her head against Willa’s shoulder.

“Who said I’m making any for you?” Willa teased.

“Just because Sailor and I live in the guest house doesn’t mean we can actually fend for ourselves,” Waverly said.

“Morning, Duke,” Sailor said, her eyes skittering from me to the coffee pot. “Rough night?”

“Rough—oh, you mean the split lip?”

She nodded.

“Savage and I wailed on each other,” I explained.

“For what purpose?” Waverly asked. “Was he being an asshole again?”

“Waverly,” Willa said with a sigh.
