Waverly grinned. “Little Punk.”

I let out a laugh. “No better nickname for you.”

“Can I have a sip of your beer?” Waverly asked with a teasing twinkle in her eye.

“Chill, LP,” Savage said. “At least until you find a way to get a fake ID.”

“Savage!” I shoved away from him.

He shrugged. “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”

“She’ll never make it to adulthood,” I complained. “Not if you aid and abet her.”

“Someone’s gotta teach her,” Savage said. “Might as well learn from the best.”

“Yeah, that would be me,” Duke said. “I’m the one who taught her how to defend herself.”

“And that knowledge almost got her kicked out of school,” I pointed out.

“I’m standing right here,” Waverly complained.

Her cell phone vibrated across the counter and Jessica’s name appeared on the screen. Waverly looked at me. “Can I take this?”

I sighed. “Sure.”

Waverly picked up her cell phone and put it to her ear. “Hey, girl. Gimme a sec.” She grabbed another piece of ham and pineapple pizza and trekked toward the bedroom. The door closed and I could no longer hear my sister.

Savage looked at me, a teasing grin on his face. And then I looked at Duke.

My boys. My family.

And the only reason I’d gotten through the crazy things life had thrown at me over the years.

“No fake ID’s,” I said to Savage.

“Yeah, yeah.”

“I mean it,” I warned.

“Oooh, hot teacher voice. I like it.”

“Savage,” I snapped.

“No fake ID’s. I promise.”

The washer beeped. I set my pizza crust down and wiped my greasy fingers on a paper towel. I changed out the sheets and put them in the dryer. I pressed a couple of buttons and a few seconds later they were tumbling. By the time Duke and Savage left, they’d be dry.

This had felt like the longest day of my life.

I was halfway done with my beer when I realized Waverly was still in the bedroom, though I had a sneaking suspicion that she had long been off the phone with Jessica and was now talking to Dylan. I still didn’t know how I felt about him—after all, it wasn’t like Iknewhim, or had spent any amount of time with him.

Savage poked my forehead. “What’s got you upset?”

“Waverly’s boyfriend,” I said. “I don’t know anything about him.”

I took my beer and went to the couch and plopped down. Duke grabbed another few beers and Savage picked up the pizza boxes and brought them over.

“I could find out about him,” Savage said.
