I raised my brows. “By tracking him down and intimidating him?”

“Nah, that would be so…henchman-like.” Savage set the pizza boxes onto the coffee table and then sat next to me. “I could do a background check.”

“That’s a little extreme, don’t you think?” I asked. “Let’s do this the old-fashioned way and just get to know him.”

“The kid is smitten with Waverly. I don’t think he’s going anywhere,” Duke added, sitting on the other side of me so I was sandwiched between them. “We gotta know more about this guy.”

“I’m surprised you didn’t already get him checked out,” I accused him. “After all, you knew about this long before the rest of us.”

The bedroom door opened, and Waverly strode out. Her cheeks were flushed, and I narrowed my eyes at her.

“So, how’s Jessica? You guys okay?” I asked knowingly.

“Yeah, we’re fine.” She bit her thumbnail. “Dylan called while I was on the phone with her. I talked to him for a bit.”

Savage grinned and pointed at her face. “Yeah, we can see that.”

“Savage!” She flushed harder, turned around, and marched back into the bedroom. The door slammed shut with teenage embarrassment.

I elbowed Savage in the ribs. “Nice going. I thought you guys were okay.”

“We are okay.” He smiled. “I was just doing my job and embarrassing the hell out of her like the brotherly sort that I am.”

“But you don’t have to makemylife harder, do you?” I demanded, swiping the beer from Savage and taking a sip before handing it back to him. “If you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go do some damage control.”

Chapter7

I knockedon the bedroom door and a moment later Waverly called, “Come in.”

The main light was off, but she’d plugged in the twinkle lights. She was lying on the air mattress, her black Doc Marten covered feet sticking out of the fairy fort.

“Hey,” I said as I squatted down and grabbed her foot.

“Hey.”

“You sound far too morose after just having spoken to your boyfriend,” I teased. “Scooch over.”

She wiggled her body over and I flopped down next to her.

“Talk to me,” I said.

“I hate how he teases me,” she mumbled.

“So, tell him that.”

“Yeah. Like he’d listen.”

“You might be surprised,” I said. “Is that all this is about?”

“Savage is overprotective,” she said. “I get it. I’m like his little sister. But I have a boyfriend. And I want Dylan to be comfortable around you…around them. But I don’t want Savage teasing me in front of Dylan. You know?”

“Ah,” I said. “I think I get it now. You want to seem really cool in front of your boyfriend, who you know I won’t let you see if I don’t get to at least hang out with him long enough to ascertain if he’s worthy of you.”

She sat up and tossed the pillow she was hugging to her chest to the bed. “That was a lot of words. I need you to promise to keep Savage on a leash anytime Dylan’s around, okay?”

“What makes you think I can keep Savage on a leash?” I asked in amusement. “His biker name is literallySavage.”

“How’d he get that name, anyway?”
