“What other things?” Savage asked, slipping into the same protective mode as Duke.

I looked at him, noting the feral glint in his eyes. That glint was a warning to anyone who knew him. He was in hair-trigger mode and could fire off at any moment.

I immediately took his hand and threaded his fingers through mine. He glanced at me and gave my hand a little squeeze, but his attention immediately focused back on Waverly.

Waverly tapped the rim of her water glass in thought. “He said I was going to be knocked up before graduation and that I’d have to work the stripper pole like Mom just so I could feed my brat. And he added that when he was home from college, he’d come by and throw me a few twenties. So, I slugged him as hard as I could and then launched myself at him and then hit him again. Teachers broke up the fight before I could finish kicking his ass.”

“You told me it was only one punch,” I remarked.

“I lied.” Waverly grinned.

“He hit you back?” Savage asked.

“No. He never got a chance. Pussy.”

Savage’s lips twitched like he wanted to laugh, but he held it in.

“Give me your hands,” Duke said to her.

She immediately held out her hands. Duke examined her knuckles and nodded. “You need ice.”

“We need a server,” Savage muttered. “What is it with you Gravestones and football players?”

“What does that mean?” Waverly asked.

I froze for a moment and then elbowed Savage in the ribs.

“Dude. What the fuck?”

“Will someone tell me what’s going on?” Waverly demanded.

“When we were juniors, I had my own shitty experience with a football player,” I stated.

Waverly’s eyes widened. “Yeah?”

“Yeah,” I said. I looked around. “Seriously, where is the server?”

“We don’t come to O’Reilly’s for the service, we come for the food that causes stomach pains after,” Savage said.

“But so worth it,” Waverly said. “So, what happened?”

“With what?” I asked.

“The football player.”

“We were at a bonfire in a field,” I said. “And Troy had been paying attention to me all night. Getting me beer and whatnot. And then he asked if I wanted to go for a walk.” I stared at her. “Let that be a lesson to you.”

She nodded.

I sighed. “He was getting handsy and saying I’d been teasing him all night, and that it was time to pay up. Just really gross stuff, you know? And when I told him I wanted to go back to the party, he grabbed me and shoved me to the ground.”

“Willa,” Waverly whispered.

Duke wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “It’s okay, LP. Savage and I didn’t like the prick from the moment we saw him, so we’d been watching out for her all night.”

“Only I didn’t know it,” I admitted with a smile. “I didn’t even have to scream before the both of them were there, pulling Troy off me.”

“And then what?” Waverly asked, enraptured with the story.
