“We wanted to kill him,” Savage said lightly. “But Willa wouldn’t let us.”
“Right side of the tracks,” I explained, and then pointed to the three of us. “Wrong side of the tracks.”
“Rich daddy?” Waverly guessed, her expression turning glum.
“Very rich daddy,” I said.
“Assholes,” Waverly muttered.
“Why don’t you go up to the bar and order for us,” I suggested.
“Okay.” Waverly climbed out of the booth.
“I’ll help.” Savage nudged me and I slid out to let him up.
The two of them headed for the bar, leaving me alone with Duke.
“You sat next to him,” Duke said, his brows drawn together.
“Jealous?” I asked.
“Insanely.”
“You have no reason to be,” I said.
“No?”
“No.”
“Why not?” he demanded.
“I sat next to Savage because I knew if I sat next to you, I’d be thinking about your texts from this morning.” I leaned over the table and lowered my voice, “And I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from touching you underneath the table. Happy?”
Duke smiled wide enough to make his dimples pop. “Insanely. But I’m still horny as fuck.”
“You should do something about that,” I teased.
“I tried. In the shower this morning. It didn’t help at all, really. It was a warmup more than anything.” He played with the discarded straw wrapper. “You told her about Troy.”
“But noteverythingabout Troy,” I pointed out. “I don’t want her to know about what you guys did to himafterthe party…”
“Were you ever going to tell her about Troy?”
“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to.”
“So, she’s suspended,” he said after a moment. “For how long?”
“A week. Just long enough to tank what’s left of her grades. She’ll fail her sophomore year and have to take summer school if she wants to graduate on time.”
“Pull her out. Homeschool her. She’s whip-smart. She can get her GED early.”
“One little problem,” I said. “I’m not her legal guardian and her legal guardian is missing in action.”
“Fucking Angel,” he muttered.
“I’m proud of her, Duke. Waverly, I mean. For standing up for herself.”
“She stood up for you too,” he reminded me.
