“She’s been nothing but encouraging,” Waverly defended. “In fact, she’s been so encouraging she’s one step away from being a cheerleader.”

“We still haven’t figured out what we’re going to do this week during your suspension,” I said.

“Stay home and eat ice cream out of the carton?” she asked hopefully.

I raised my brows. “Let’s save that for those really bad times in your life.”

“This isn’t bad?” she asked. Her blue eyes met mine.

I smiled slowly. “Not nearly as bad as a really bad haircut…”

Waverly mock shuddered.

“But don’t think you’re getting off easy,” I warned. “I mean it. You’re not going to get to sit around and use this as a vacation.”

“I know.” Waverly’s phone danced across the table and she immediately grabbed it. “Hey, Jess.” She scooted out of the booth and disappeared.

“Her phone rings more than mine does,” I lamented.

“I could call you all the time,” Savage said. “To make you feel better.”

“Youdocall me all the time,” I joked.

“I get bored easily.”

“What a nice compliment.” I rolled my eyes at him. “Call the brunette you rescued at Shelly’s. Let her entertain you.”

“That’s already over,” Savage said.

“Why?” I asked.

“She can work in the office at Charlie’s,” Duke said.

I blinked at the sudden change in conversation. “What? What are you talking about?”

“Waverly,” Duke said. “Boxer can show her how to do spreadsheets, take orders, that kind of stuff. She’ll be surrounded by Blue Angels so she’ll be safe and watched over, and her time will be occupied.”

“Oh, that’s actually a great idea,” I said with a sigh.

“Genius,” Savage said. “She’ll hate boring menial work so badly she’ll be begging to go back to school.”

“You sure Boxer won’t mind?” I asked.

“Nah. He won’t mind. He’d probably prefer it,” Duke said. “The guy hates spreadsheets. You drop her off in the morning and I’ll drop her back at your place when she’s done for the day.”

Waverly came back to the table, a huge smile across her face.

“What?” I asked. “Why are you smiling like a loon?”

“I’m a hero,” Waverly said. “Everyone knows I punched Cal and I’m the most popular girl in school! I thought for sure I’d be ostracized! This is so cool!”

“Just don’t forget those that knew you when,” Savage said.

“Never.” She grinned. “Just because I’m suddenly popular doesn’t mean I’m going to ditch my best friend or my boyfriend. They’re the best.”

“So, if you get invited to sit at the cool kids table?” I pressed.

“Willa,” she drawled. “Didn’t you hear? Iamthe cool kid. Whatever table I’m atisthe cool kid’s table.”
