“My bad.” I couldn’t help the grin that spread across my face. “So, what you did turned out not to be social suicide. Good to know.”

“It wouldn’t have mattered if it had turned out like that,” Waverly said slowly. “I mean, I didn’t hit Cal for any sense of clout. And if I’d thought before I reacted, I would’ve…”

“You would’ve what?” I queried.

She sighed. “Made the exact same decision.”

“Atta girl!” Savage cheered.

I exited the restroom and came face to face with Duke.

“Hey,” I said, head cocked.

“Hey.” He grasped my hips and drove me back against the door.

“What are you—”

His lips covered mine and any protests I might’ve had flew out the window. My best friend was kissing me in a hallway in a restaurant where at any moment my sister or our other best friend might see us.

I placed my hands on his chest and closed my eyes as the sensation of his strong body pressed into me. “You’re pure evil, Duke.”

“Me? You’re the one in the leather skirt.”

I smiled against his lips and opened my eyes.

Ever since the night we fell into bed together, it had ripped the Band-Aid off the feelings we’d both suppressed for years.

Now there was no putting them away. They’d been unleashed, and the only thing to do would be to let them run their course. I just hoped we could still remain friends when it was over.

“When are you going to let me take you out on a date?” Duke asked as he took a step back.

“A date?” I sucked in a breath of surprise. “Why would you want to take me on a date?”

“Because that’s what people do. They date. They go out to eat. They hold hands. They fight over the remote.”

“Fight over the remote? That sounds like cohabitation.”

He shrugged.

“What are you guys doing?” Waverly asked. “I thought you were going to the bathroom.”

I jumped, not having heard her approach. My cheeks suffused with color. “I’ve used it. Duke was just…ah…he…”

“I told her if she has shit to do in the morning, I can take you to Charlie’s,” he said, not appearing at all flustered. “Savage told you about Charlie’s, right?

He was so cool and calm, I wondered how he was able to think on his feet.

“Oh.” Waverly bit her lip. “Yeah. He told me.”

The three of us headed back into the main dining room. Savage was laying down some cash. Duke’s phone chimed and he pulled it out of his pocket. He quickly scanned it and then said, “That was Crow. The desks and dresser are in the rental.”

“Oh, that’s great,” I said.

“Can I drive home?” Waverly asked. “I need the practice.”

I handed her the keys and she darted out of the restaurant. I shook my head and smiled.

“What?” Duke asked.
