“Why not?” he demanded.

“Because I really like this guy and I want to keep him to myself a while longer.”

“Because you know Duke and I will put him through the wringer,” Savage said. “To make sure he’s good enough for you.”

“Yeah, and like all my other boyfriends, you’ll scare this one away too.”

“What can I say? You have shitty taste in men,” Savage teased. “Even Waverly has chosen better than you. Dylan came to a barbecue with the boys and held his own. What, you don’t think your man can handle us? You know, at some point we’re going to have to meet him.”

“And when that time comes, he will be prepared.” I stood up and turned, Savage’s eyes immediately dropping to my skirt.

“Well, well, well.” Savage rubbed his jaw, but it didn’t hide his smirk. “Someone had areallygood night.”

Waverly frowned in confusion, but I knew what he was referring to immediately. I hastily grabbed a couch pillow and put it behind me to conceal the residue of my release on my dress.

“Bye, Savage,” I said pointedly. “Thanks for dropping by.”

“Thanks for the pizza,” Waverly said, reaching for another slice. “And the TV.”

“Sure thing,” Savage said, rising from his seat. “Duke and I are headed out to Odessa tomorrow so I won’t be dropping by randomly with pizza. At least not this week.”

He kissed my cheek and then grabbed Waverly’s messy bun before pulling her into a hug. “Stay out of trouble,” he said to her.

“Youstay out of trouble,” Waverly sassed back.

“No promises.” He grinned, and then left.

“But why do I have to go to school?” Waverly demanded the next morning. “It doesn’t make sense. I already have to go to summer school, so why not blow off school now?”

“Because we can’t do anything that lets them know anything is amiss. As far as the school system knows you’re at home every night with a loving mother who cooks dinner, not hanging out with bikers, pizza boxes, and your older sister.”

“This isn’t going to work long term,” Waverly muttered as she grabbed her book bag. “We need another plan. I won’t make it through two more years of high school where you’re forging Mom’s signature and making excuses for her.”

“Yes, you will make it. And the way you do that is to go to school and pretend everything is okay. If anyone from the administration asks about paperwork that didn’t make it to us or anything like that, you tell them we moved. Give them this address.”

“What do I say if one of them wants to call Mom?”

“Tell them she lost her phone and got a new number. Tell them they can talk to me at any time while Angel gets her phone sorted. Come on, you kept Dylan a secret for weeks. You can figure out how to lie to the admin. I have faith in you.”

She grinned. “So you’re saying you want me to be sneaky and underhanded?”

“Waverly, this is really important. Do you understand what happens if the school system finds out Angel is gone?”

“I feel like we need a secret handshake,” she said.

“Most definitely.” I urged her out the front door. “We better go or we’ll be late.”

“You know, Dylan’s offered to drive me to school, so you don’t have to leave this early on days you don’t have to be at work.”

“But that would mean you’d be on the back of his bike,” I pointed out. “And you know how I feel about that.”

“You get on the back of Duke’s bike. And Savage’s. And I’ve ridden on the back oftheirbikes. Several times.”

“Get in the car, Waverly. And stop being a teenager.”

“I’ve got a few more years of that.”

“Saints preserve us. I’ll never make it.” I went to the driver’s side door.
