“Ouch, what am I sitting on?” Waverly asked, reaching beneath her to pull out the bag of candy.

“Ah, Duke’s version of a flower bouquet.” I took the bag from her and tossed it in the back.

“I love this for you.” She grinned. “I love this for me, too. Because when you get candy, I get candy.”

“I shared the lemon drops with you,” I said. “But if you touch those root beer barrels, I will end you. Sister or not.”

She blinked. “You need more coffee.”

“That is true.” I buckled my seat belt and started the engine. “Doc’s engagement brunch is on Saturday.”

“Mkay.”

“So, I’ll be at Brooklyn’s house from one to four. So you’re free to see whoever you want to see, hang out with whoever you want to hang out with. Just not alone at the house.”

“Heard loud and clear, chief.” Waverly saluted.

I pulled into the parking lot of the school. She hopped out quickly and with a wave, she was gone—striding toward the brick wall where Dylan waited for her.

My phone buzzed.

It was a text from Duke.

Duke

About to hit the road. Don’t eat all those root beer barrels in one sitting.

Grinning, I typed out:

Me

Miss you too. Drive safe. And act surprised when Savage mentions the mark on my dress from last night…

My phone rang immediately.

“Yes?” I answered.

“What the fuck,” he growled.

“He didn’t tell you about last night?” I asked. “He was at my house when I got home. He bought us a TV and was eating pizza on the couch. He saw the stain on my dress—thanks, by the way, I had no idea I walked through the restaurant with that—”

“I didn’t notice,” he muttered. “How did you explain that to Savage?”

“I finally came clean about dating someone but told him I wasn’t ready for you guys to meet him.”

“That won’t fend him off for long.”

“No,” I said with a sigh. “It won’t.”

“There’s a solution to this.”

“Telling him. Yeah. I know that.”

He was silent for a moment and then he said, “We could show up together at Doc and Boxer’s wedding.” There was some shuffling on the other end of the phone and Duke murmured something to the other person. “Think about it. Gotta go. Talk later.”

Duke hung up and I was left staring at my phone. Finally, I shook myself out of my daze at his words and put the car into reverse.

Before I exited the parking lot, I saw a trio of girls heading for the school. They were all wearing cut up T-shirts.
