JOSEF

“Hello, who is this?” I answer a number with no name on my cell while sitting in my cabin, wondering how I screwed up what started as an amazing time with Mari. I’m ready to scream at the telemarketer or whoever this is.

“Nice way to answer your phone, Josef.” I inhale a deep involuntary breath as I recognize the voice, though it’s understandably not as soft and sweet as usual.

“Well, Mari, I’ve had a rough day. A potential friend misunderstood my intentions today,” I say, trying to sound as sincere as I truly am.

“Maybe she did. You told that potential friend that you also wanted to help her. You might be able to help her with something right now if you don’t mind.”

“What can I do for you?”

She’s explaining how she picked up Connie, who was escaping from the Depths with two thugs after her, when I hear a thud, and she pauses for a few seconds.

“Are you alright?” I ask.

“Yeah. This is all I need right now. Some jerk just hit the back of my car. This should be quick. I’ll just exchange info—”

“Drive away! Now!”

“Connie, what the fuck?”

“What’s happening?” There’s a pause, causing my body to tighten with anger because someone might have hurt her.

“Connie! She reached over, kicked my foot off the brake, and pressed on the gas. I just got control back. Great! Now I left the scene of an accident.”

“Good!” I breathe out, relieved to hear Mari speak again. “Keep going. Where are you now? What direction are you heading?

“Market Street and Seventh. North, I think.”

“Market goes east and west. You don’t have a compass heading in your car near the radio?”

“W. West! I never noticed that before. Wait, I see in the rearview that car is coming up quickly behind me.”

“Drive fast! Turn left at South Tenth Street!” I hear her tire screech. “Slow down. Let them get to about a car length behind you.”

“What!?”

“Do it, please.”

“He’s going to hit us again!”

“There’ll be a quick right coming up on Ludlow Street! Turn!” Another pause but expected this time.

“I turned. I don’t see him. He’s not behind us anymore!”

“Speed up. He’ll have passed Ludlow. It’s going to take him time to turn around. Take another fast turn on Eleventh in either direction. Try to leave skid marks,” I hear the screeching once more. “Slow down, don’t slam the brakes. Now stop and turn to head in the opposite direction from where you left the tracks.”

Pause. “Done!”

“Is he behind you?”

“I don’t see him!” She exclaims. I let out the breath I was holding.

“Speed up! Head out of the city to Spring Lane. Do you know how to get there?”
